After the padi padi leche manasu debacle, sharwa is back with a crime drama called ranarangam. The film was released alongside another thriller titled Evaru. Let’s see how the movie turns out.
history:
the movie is set in vizag where deva(sharwanand) and his friends sell black tickets. During this time, Sharwa falls in love with Geetha (Kalyani Priyadarshan). When all seems to be going well, Deva takes on the local MLA (Murali Sharma) and enters the illegal liquor business. As expected, the game changes and he begins a tug-of-war. sharwa makes it big in the business but remains someone’s target all the time. The rest of the story is about how Sharwa kills all his enemies and becomes number one in the business.
positive points:
As always, Sharwa does a sincere job in her role and is very good in her different age groups. his delivery of dialogues, serious attitude in the mature look is very good. kalyani priyadarshan gets a good role and she does it superbly. Whether it’s the traditional looks of hers or the chemistry of hers with sharwa, it all works for her in this movie.
aadarsha balakrishna is impeccable in his role. Raja gets a key character and plays him with sincerity. the first half has decent scenes as the liquor mob is well shown. sharwa’s climb to the top is handled well.
the love story between sharwa and kalyani has been shown in a great way as the romance looks fresh and cute. Murali Sharma does a good job once again, as he is apt as the cunning villain.
negative points:
The first thing that strikes you is the role of kajal, as it’s hard to understand how she accepted a role that had nothing to offer. she had no dialogue, no screen space and she was left as a mere small-time character artist.
The second half is where the film takes a turn as the crime drama becomes monotonous and boring. the so-called gangster scenes don’t create much of an effect and have been narrated simply.
Also, the story doesn’t have many twists or an engaging point of conflict, which is the biggest drawback of the movie. the film misses the riveting gangster scenes that are a must for this type of genre film.
technical aspects:
prashanth pillai’s music is good as the songs are very well set in the narrative. the background score is also very good and enhances the performances. the script is where the movie falters as it goes back and forth in time and this part is tackled well in the first half but not handled well in the second. the camera work is neat as it shows vizag and spain in a decent way. sharwa has been well designed in its mature look.
as for the director sudheer varma, he has done a good job with the film. his narration is good in the first half as it shows the rise of sharwa and his romance with kalyani in a good way. but the actual writing and direction of the movie is boring. there isn’t much of a sticking point to mull over and this is where the movie gets boring. there are no major challenges for sharwa and things become easy for him.
verdict:
Overall, ranarangam is a routine gangster drama that doesn’t have much going on. Sharwa leads from the front and the first half has good romance and crime scenes. but the second half is where the movie suffers, as the lack of a sticking point, dull storytelling, and rushed climax make things a bit difficult for the audience. the movie isn’t that bad but it also doesn’t have great drama to keep you hooked. so watch it only if you have nothing else to do.
