chitralahari is a movie that needs to click at all costs as sai dharam tej is going through a rough patch in his career. Directed by Kishore Thirumala, this movie has hit the screens today. let’s see if tej gets the hit he so badly needs or not.
vijay(sai dharam tej) is an engineering graduate who develops an app and continues to approach various companies. but to his bad luck, he is rejected most of the time. With no other choice, he starts working at a TV store and falls in love with Lahari (Kalyani Priyadarshan). but things change with the entrance of shanti (nivetha pehturaj) when vijay loses his love and hope in life. The rest of the story is how Vijay recovers and proves that he is not a loser and that he is successful in life.
sai dharam perfectly fits the role of the loser. he has perfectly captured the emotions of the character and directs the film through his expressions. His acting in all the scenes with his father Posani is very good and Tej shows touching emotions during this time.
kalyani priyadarshan is fine as the confused lover. but nivetha pehturaj gets a meaty role and is superb in her serious nature. From her expressions to her body language, she was perfectly suited to the role of corporate director.
posani is amazing as tej’s father and his character can be related to every middle class father in society. As always, Vennela Kishore was hilarious as an English-speaking Tamil boy. I wish I had more screen presence.
sunil has a good role and was good in the first half. there are many situations in the film that young people struggling in life will connect with. brahmaji was efficient as the crooked chief. the dialogues need a special mention, as they drive the show most of the time.
One of the biggest drawbacks of the movie is the pacing. things take forever to get to the real point. furthermore, the proceedings have a sort of dejavu feel to them, as such emotions and breakups in love stories have been shown in many movies before.
The climax of the film is not as exciting and could have been better since things were finished in a rush. Kalyani and her role are unconvincing as her character lacks clarity in many areas.
There is not much comedy and entertainment in the film as it has a serious note. while the emotions work well, the spark in the proceedings is somehow missing.
The film’s production values are decent as the film has been wrapped in a neat, simple note. dsp’s music is disappointing as some good songs would have made a big difference in this movie. the editing is sharp and so were the dialogues that had a lot of depth. kalyani priyadarshan has dressed in a bad way as she looks old school on most screens.
as for the director kishore thirumala, he has done a good job with the film. his strength is the dialogues and the emotions and here he has executed them well. but you always get the feeling that the film is missing that spark, either in the narrative or in the script, that could have taken the process to another level. he narrates the movie slowly and doesn’t show anything new, but introduces sai dharam tej neatly.
Overall, chitralahari is an emotional underdog story with some decent moments in both halves. but the film’s slow pace and serious tone may not appeal to a part of the audience that expects entertainment. therefore, the film’s box office prospects will also be tested. Having said that, the film is much better than Tej’s previous flops and has some feel-good moments that are quite relatable to youngsters. Finally, the film can easily be shot once, but keep your expectations in check.
