Yamapasam movie review

Touted as South India’s first zombie thriller, the Tamil dubbed film, Yampasham, premiered today amid stiff competition. Armed with a unique genre, let’s see how this zombie thriller fares.

history-:

Set in ooty, yamapasham begins with a toxic chemical leak in a factory. When workers don’t clean up or notify authorities, the leak that turns out to be a deadly zombie virus slowly spreads to humans.

on the other hand, karthik (jayam ravi) is a sincere traffic police officer whose life is turned upside down when his sister is kidnapped during the time this virus spreads throughout the city. Parallel to this, a group of doctors including Renuka (Lakshmi Menon) are trying to find a cure for this deadly virus.

The events that take place after the leak of the virus and how the main couple’s paths cross and how they manage to solve this problem makes up for the rest of the story.

points in favor-:

The director is to be applauded for taking a chance on a unique genre that has rarely been attempted in India. the zombie genre, although famous for decades in hollywood, has never been brought into focus and the director had the right idea in mind to introduce the new genre to the south.

jayam ravi and lakshmi menon have acted well within the limitations of their characters. Kali Venkat brought some laughs into the mix. the rest of the cast did a decent job. the first half gets off to a decent start and the interval blast is quite interesting. a short, crisp runtime and impressive production values are other highlights of this zombie thriller.

negative points-:

for starters, the studio that bought the rights could have chosen a much better title than yamapasam, which sounds like a b-grade movie. Although the idea was novel and the director had plenty of opportunities to create enough emotions, he didn’t take the opportunity and throws in too much melodrama that bogs down the process.

The logic is ruled out and a little more clarity on the virus leak would have been helpful. the second half, especially the climax, are a huge disappointment. after an interesting interval explosion, the second half dives right in and falls further with the climactic fight.

The abrupt ending also leaves a lot to be desired. dubbing for some artists is worse. the love story is half done and could have been avoided entirely. the actors are quite famous in tamil but relatively unknown in tollywood, which will also work against the dubbed version.

technical aspects-:

Production values are pretty good. the editing is below average, but the placement of the songs could have been better or avoided altogether. the background score is unusually tall and cuts off abruptly in places.

the dialogs are not good to write and due to the average translation effort, the effect is lost in some places. the visual effects are average, but the zombie makeup is commendable. the decorations bring a positive effect to the events.

verdict:-

Overall, yamapasham fails to impress the audience. Although the concept is brand new to the South, the creators have completely failed to produce an exciting ride. In addition, the ending will leave viewers especially upset. Finally, if you have nothing better to do and you’re still hell-bent on watching this zombie movie, enter at your own risk.
