one of the most remarkable things about titanic is its long duration. first of all, if you saw titanic and thought it looked like an expensive movie, it definitely was. buzzfeed news reported that the final budget for the film was $200 million.

however, it didn’t start with that budget. however, due to the effects and the production in general, the finances continued to increase. The president of 20th Century Fox at the time, Bill Mechanic, tried to get director James Cameron to cut parts of the film while he was making it, Buzzfeed News reported.

“From a financial standpoint, this movie is completely out of control,” the mechanic told Cameron. “Nothing is going to change that. all we can do now is contain it. so here are some scenes we’d like to see cut from the filming schedule.”

but, cameron insisted he wasn’t cutting anything.

“If you want to cut my movie,” Cameron said, “you’ll have to fire me, and to fire me you’ll have to kill me.” Due to the fact that “no other director could handle” the making of Titanic, Fox’s president had to rest and let Cameron continue with the film.

It ended up being the first movie to gross $1 billion at the box office when it was released.

but there were other people in real life and they were on that ship. Cinemablend reported that most of the supporting characters Rose and Jack interact with were real.

Victor Garber’s role as Thomas Andrews, the Titanic’s chief designer, went down with the ship, according to various accounts. he apparently also experienced the same kind of guilt seen in the film, because he is reported to have only stayed in the smoking room in first class on the ship.

And Kathy Bates’ character, Molly Brown, whose “new money” annoyed the other First Class members, helped passengers get into lifeboats as it sank.

“I wanted to be able to tell the audience, without the slightest twinge of guilt: This is real,” Cameron said of the film, according to Buzzfeed News. “if you went back in a time machine…this is what you would have seen…second officer lightoller would be there…and wallace hartley would be leading the band in a spirited waltz right there, a few feet away. ..
