Considering how many guys love watching porn, it’s no wonder they’ve also wondered if they could star in an erotic movie of their own. For some, these musings go beyond idle distraction. So, beyond an insatiable sexual appetite, as well as the willingness to be naked in front of the camera, what are the requirements to succeed in the porn industry?

Is a large penis necessary or can you get by with a very firm and aesthetically pleasing one? Is there such a thing as too big, too thick, or too long? Does it help to have had more partners in the past, or is inexperience not bad? do you have to be a certain age? how about a certain physical construct?
With so much uncertainty about how you might get involved, it’s easy to find it all pretty confusing. what you should know is that there is actually a pretty common (and simple) way to accelerate your career as a male porn star, and that is to date a female porn star.
As porn actress Julia Ann explains, “Getting into the industry isn’t as easy for men as it is for women. It’s always been that the most common way men became actors was when they dated actresses and they wanted to shoot together.”
If your current partner is already shooting, you may have a potential ticket to porn stardom. if not, well, it might be a bit more complicated. Aside from being a pretty selective industry, the road to becoming a big name isn’t exactly the exciting and easy penis-squeezing journey you might be imagining.
just like hollywood, getting into porn will likely require hard work, perseverance, some inside connections, and a bit of good luck.
If you’re curious where to start, askmen spoke with the talented ryan driller, a true male porn star, about his story.
1. how a real porn star got started in the industry
if you talk to most celebrities, regardless of the medium or sector they are in, they will explain that reaching the top was not a walk in the park. For Ryan Driller, the experience was a bit bumpy. About a decade ago, he retired from what he called “traditional office work,” clocking in 40 hours a week and putting out a new button-up shirt to wear Monday through Friday. Once he walked out of those corporate doors one last time, he decided to embark on a new journey that took him down the opposite path.
“I learned that doing what makes me happy will make me much happier and more successful,” he says. “So, since I had always thought about going into porn and had the time and means to do so, I started looking to get into the industry.”

diller started out by applying to businesses he knew as a consumer (more on that later), but eventually turned to craigslist “adult gigs” to build his network. “From there, the producers and other people on set would share my information with other productions they were on, and I just kept hiring more and more,” he explains.
2. Which porn companies should men apply to?
There is a lot of preparation needed to switch from one job to another, especially if it is a new industry that is x-rated. while you may have tweaked your resume to land that first full-time job after college, if you’re going to build your career in porn, piercer says applying to companies is downright a waste of time, if you’re a men. , that’s it.
“As a man, there are no porn companies to apply to. Trust me, I’ve tried. I’m on set with producers and none of them have seen their email,” says the piercer. “when a ‘give me a chance’ email or direct message is received by a porn site, business or actor, they are deleted before they are opened. the assumption is that your email has a micropenis attached to a belly and his grammar never exceeded the second degree.”.
While that may or may not be an exaggeration, she points out that when she met with a producer at a naughty america event, she was entering his email address into her phone when a message from him sent 15 months earlier came up. “She laughed that she never opened it or looked at it, and threw it out with the other 200 she gets every day,” says Piercer. That’s how she knew this could be her big break.
Instead of going directly to the big companies that produce and market porn, Driller says getting involved with an agency is a better and more successful path. “Start with three photos, head, full body, and a clothed photo. If they like your submission, then they’ll ask for the other stuff and maybe you can go to their site,” he says.
“You might be thrown into a ‘content swapping’ scene with one of their girls who is recording content for her personal website. You won’t get paid for this, but you’ll be put on a real stage, and take a photo with the production there to see if you can do it. You’ll get a copy of the content for your own site for when and if you create one.”

3. how do you choose a stage name?
Many years ago, when porn was still a relatively new entertainment industry (and definitely not something you searched for online at any given time), getting the name right was really important. It was a way to protect actors from being discovered by their friends and family long before google and facebook got rid of privacy.
Currently, driller says emphasizing his name is old-school thinking. there’s no hiding from your life as an adult movie star, so you might as well own her. “A stage name doesn’t matter anymore,” he adds. “just to be honest. thanks to social media, google, your ex and/or his friends, and your ex-high school classmates, you’ll get noticed and the internet will advertise your real name everywhere anyway” .
4. what to consider before doing porn
Unlike becoming a teacher, a firefighter, or even pursuing a career in law, the porn industry isn’t exactly something you’ll write to your parents about. some might not even respect your decision. this makes it important to fully commit before acting out a single scene or removing an item of clothing.
If you’re prepared to deal with the ebbs and flows of the porn industry, Driller says it’s important to take the time to consider the personal and professional ramifications of making a specific body part your claim to fame:
tell people first
Instead of having several awkward conversations with your loved ones, reach out and tell them your dirty secret early on. “First, tell your girlfriend, your mom, her mom, and your sister that you’re doing porn,” says Driller. “They’ll find out the day your first scene comes out anyway. Are you coming from your ex, her boyfriend, your neighbor, or her boss? Then think about that conversation.”
have a plan
While actors and musicians can perform well in their golden years, for adult film stars, the same is not always the case. There will come a time when you won’t want to (or won’t be invited to) make videos anymore, so considering your future employment is a good idea.
If you decide you want to go into a new field after doing porn, it might not be as easy of a transition as you might have hoped. “Think about what you want to be doing in five years,” says Driller, “Do you agree that you’ll probably never get to do that? If you fail at porn, you won’t be [directing porn] in five years. If you want to be professor, you won’t do that in 10 years. porn is less taboo, but porn will close almost any door where you have to work for someone else.”
5. what are some tips for getting into porn?
Once you’ve accepted the reality of the career, exploring the industry will be confusing and sometimes disappointing. however, there are a few ways to get more auditions and gigs to build your portfolio. Here, the piercer shares his pro tips:

Your small town probably doesn’t have an open audition for an orgy that’s mass-produced and shared virally. pack your bags! “If you really want to get into the industry, you have to be located in one of these three cities,” the driller notes. “you won’t be booked or booked away, for a while. year, most of your bookings will be on the same day, when you get an email that says, ‘come to this place, now, if you want to work.’

“You have to be ready to do what’s asked of you when they’re asked,” he adds. “You have to show that you can give Naughty America what she wants, instead of giving Digital Playground what she wants.” you want. if you can’t, then there’s a whole line of guys behind you who can.”
“the reason you only see so many guys in your porn is because we’ve shown that we’re trustworthy and consistent. we’ve shown that we can take direction and be thrown into whatever situation they want.” the producers know what they’re getting with us, and they don’t have to take chances on whether or not the new guy can deliver. that’s why he won’t be booked until the last minute at the beginning, when no one else is available. he won’t even be alone at first, just so that when he fails, there’s someone else to take over.”
6. how safe is porn?
Over the past few years, the industry has fought against various bills and measures that attempt to require the use of condoms and a variety of safe sex practices for pornographic productions, claiming that this would harm artists and workers. When it comes to his line of work, Ryan Driller considers pornography to be “safer than 90 percent of the general public’s attitude and behavior toward sexual activity.”
“In porn, we constantly monitor our health to reduce the spread of any problems between us,” he says. “No, a test is not a protection measure, rather than your knowledge. I know that when I was tested five days ago, I had nothing. so if I have to try something next week, I know it came sometime within that window. I can alert those I worked with to hopefully let them get treated and not spread further. they too can do the same. Generally speaking, the industry is safe, in my opinion. we take care of each other. we make sure everyone is aware, comfortable and safe.”
7. Would I recommend a porn star to do porn?
While it may seem like porn stars are living out the kind of dream your teenage self always wanted to come true, Driller says that while I would recommend watching porn, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as a career path.
“i love my job. i’m here because i want to be here. i don’t need to be here. i’ve worked in ‘the real world’ and followed my own path everywhere. i thought of all the ramifications and possibilities that could arise going after porn. I’ve had conversations with my family and friends. I know what I’ve gotten myself into and what I’m doing,” he says.
“but the moment you’re labeled a porn star, your credibility is gone, your morality is seen as flawed and compromised, your intelligence is questioned, and your well-being is in question. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. unless that they absolutely know and want to be here. if you’re just considering it, you don’t belong. if you think you’d be fine, you don’t belong. if you really wanted to be in porn but you’re just not sure, then you don’t belong. if you don’t have a plan of backup, you don’t belong. you have to be ready and willing to do anything, and run when you need too.”
the end result? really consider all the possibilities, along with what you really want out of life before you get naked in front of a camera.
8. how much do male porn stars earn?
As with any entertainment job, salaries vary quite a bit depending on the fame of the performer, but the average salary tends to be lower for male porn stars than female porn stars, for obvious reasons.
According to shira tarrant, cal state long beach professor and author of “the porn industry,” male actors can expect to earn $50 per scene on the low end for a simple blowjob scene, up to $1,000 for a scene from gay sex the average heterosexual sex scene, according to her data, pays between $200 and $600, depending on the prestige of the production company. To put those numbers into context, both the director, camera operator, and lighting crew can expect to make more money than the average male porn star. To earn just $30,000 a year, close to the average annual income, a male porn star just starting out in the industry would have to shoot a whopping 150 scenes.
