Bollywood directors Raj and DK of Family Guy fame have launched a new initiative under the banner D2R Indie to encourage young and aspiring filmmakers across the country. cinema bandi is the inaugural film in their mission that they envisioned starting from scratch. Thanks to the backing of Raj and DK, Netflix acquired Cinema Bandi and the film had its digital premiere today. here’s our review of this little indie flick.

history:

veerababu (vikas vasishta) is a car driver. accidentally finds a DSLR camera. after initially planning to sell it, he finally decides to make a movie with the camera. he hires a local wedding photographer named ganapathi as the cameraman and a hairdresser who performs the role of the hero and introduces the manga vegetable seller as the heroine of his movie.

how did veerababu and his team, who don’t even know the difference between the costumes and the shot, make the film? What problems did you face in the process? How did the people in your village help you? what is the mystery behind the camera? did veerababu and ganapathi finally make the movie they wanted or not? form the rest of the story.

positive points:

cinema bandi is about the conflict between innocence and pure mentalities. The producers are to be commended for backing such a story, and debut director Praveen Kandregula is to be commended for choosing a pure town drama and yet creating thoroughly enjoyable innocent characters and settings.

Especially, the director showed the life of the film’s main characters, their ideas and their wishes quite effectively and naturally. Throughout the film, we have the feeling that we are seeing closely the lives of Veerababu, Ganapati and Maridesh Babu. Similarly, the delicate humor written by director Praveen is also one of the main strengths of the film.

each and every one of the characters in cinema bandi are very natural. each character makes sense and implicitly advances the story. Coming to the cast, Vikas Vasishta, who played the hero, did a great job. sandeep varanasi also played a big role quite convincingly.

also, trishara, who appeared in a key role, impresses with her natural acting. the actors who played the villagers did complete justice to her roles. the dubbing is so real that the regional accent and rural flavor translated quite naturally.

negative points:

Director Praveen, who is impeccable when it comes to story and characters, seemed a bit sloppy in the storytelling department. he would have been nice if the shooting episodes in particular had been shortened. in addition, some comedy scenes that are not necessary for the story should have been removed. the scenes that take place after the camera is damaged are boring.

technical aspects:

praveen did justice as writer and director. the movie is wonderfully designed with a good story and interesting characters. the film succeeds in entertaining and informing, balancing the elements of fun and excitement. however, he should have taken special care with the narrative.

Sirish’s soundtrack is good and goes well with the narrative. the cinematography is quite impressive. all the images unfold very naturally in line with the cinematic mood. the producers are to be applauded for backing such a genuine effort. the well-planned production design on such a shoestring budget is commendable.

verdict:

cinema bandi manages to thoroughly entertain the audience. The film depicts the hilarious plight of innocent villagers who set out to make their first film with nothing but a DSLR camera in hand and immense passion in their hearts. in the process, the film brings us closer to their lives. All in all, Cinema Bandi will be the right choice for the audience who wants to enjoy a good and moving movie this weekend.
