batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was released almost five years ago, and that’s a long time to forget the ins and outs of a movie that’s pretty complicated, leading right up to this week’s release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While plot details didn’t turn out to be very important to the events of 2017’s original Justice League, the sequel to Batman v. superman, it’s probably worth refreshing your memory before the “snyder cut” as the movie chooses. go back to where the previous movie left off.

so here’s everything you need to remember, but may have forgotten, from the dawn of justice.

As its title describes, most of Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel leads up to a fight between Batman and Superman. Superman intervenes in an unnamed foreign country to save Lois Lane, causing much concern that he will one day use his powers for evil. The US government and Bruce Wayne begin to see Superman as a threat to the entire world, so Wayne decides to take matters into his own hands and take down the Man of Steel.

Thanks to Batman’s variety of gadgets, he manages to almost kill Superman with a Kryptonite spear before the two reconcile over the fact that their mothers are named Martha. After a brief conversation, the two realize that Lex Luthor was the real villain all along and that he is waking up on doomsday aboard Man of Steel’s crashed Kryptonian ship of Zod, a ship that plays a important role in the expanded version of the justice league.

The two join forces, along with Wonder Woman, to stop Doomsday. During the fight, the President of the United States drops a nuclear bomb on Doomsday which Superman catches and takes into space. he takes the full force of the bomb, but is revived by the sun and returns to the fight. Superman takes Batman’s kryptonite spear and stabs the end of the world with it. doomsday also stabs him and superman is weak enough from all the stabbings and explosions that the doomsday stab proves fatal.

everyone mourns the loss of superman, there’s a grand funeral, and in a short post-credits sequence, the ground above his coffin begins to heave. Maybe he is not dead?

batman has knights

Throughout Batman v Superman, Bruce Wayne is plagued by visions of an apocalyptic future. The world seems to be in ruins, Superman is evil, and Batman is part of the resistance attempting to save the world from some unknown terror.

These so-called “gentlemen” never actually reach their conclusion or explanation in Batman v Superman, and were cut entirely from the original theatrical release of Justice League. However, they are back and very important in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While they don’t exactly get a full explanation in the new movie just yet, they are very important to Snyder’s plans for the sequels, even though they probably aren’t happening.

but bruce wayne is not the only one who has visions of the future. After reliving Doomsday, Lex Luthor, still aboard the Kyrptonian ship, receives a vision of SteppenWolf who will soon come to Earth to claim the three Mother Boxes. This is essentially a preview of the Justice League plot, and a nice reminder that Lex knew what was coming all along.

In a scene that takes place in Bruce Wayne’s makeshift bat cave, the Flash travels through time to give Bruce a message from the future, telling him to look for “the others.” Bruce realizes that she has data on some other metahumans (Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman) among the files that she stole from Lex Luthor. We get a brief glimpse of each of these characters when Wayne sends the files to Diana Prince shortly before she leaves to fight Superman. We don’t see much of either character, but she gives us a hint that Diana and Bruce are already thinking about teaming up.
