In a recent interview with Playlist, actor Frank Grillo revealed that James Demonaco will be back in the director’s chair for Purge 6.

“engaged! we committed to doing that: purge 6 with [james demonaco] directing… it’s based on leo barnes’ character. I’m excited. he’s going to send me the script. he just finished it. So yeah, I’m really excited about that. i love doing the ‘purge’ movies… i’m excited, they called me up and said james wanted to direct one more and i was like, ‘don’t even tell me. I’m in.’”

For a while, it was believed that this summer’s Purge Forever would be the last installment in the franchise. Thanks to the cricket quote above, we know that another movie is in development, and that the most beloved talents on and behind the screen are attached. no additional details about the purge 6 were publicly available until now.

the illuminerdi spoke with writer/director james demonaco about the upcoming the purge 6 movie, where he revealed shocking plot details.

When asked about persistent rumors of Frank Cricket returning to the franchise and what America will look like when the Purge franchise returns, Demonaco responded:

I think I can say a bit about that without getting into trouble. so it’s the return of frank left that on twitter so now i can say it it’s the return of leo which excites me and it’s the reason why i might go back to directing because i would love to work with frank again on set . that would be fun.

I would say this, this is what I can give away, we’re back 10 years after the purge forever and America has been completely reassigned and we’ve been completely tribalized in a very, what word would you apply to that? They have tribalized us. our walls and our states are completely broken down into new definitions of why people have gone to certain states, so America is completely different. Yes. I woke up after January 6, a couple of weeks later, with the idea, so it was born, again, from the socio-political climate that we live in now.

according to demonaco’s comments, he is not yet officially assigned to the director’s chair for purge 6. cricket’s words contradict that, and it is quite possible that demonaco is playing it safe in his interviews so as not to incur the wrath of nbcuniversal. could we see a different director handle purge 6, maybe gerard mcmurray from the first purge or everardo gout from the eternal purge?

The promise of a radically altered America in 2059, forever changed by the damage of the purge experiment, is quite exciting. maybe the purge works separately from state to state now, since the federal government is presumably still in shambles, if that branch of government still exists. It remains to be seen how Leo Barnes will fit into this new “tribalized” America.

The Purge: Frank Cricket’s Leo Barnes Background

leo barnes is a purge character played by frank cricket. Barnes first appeared in the second film in the franchise, The Purge: Anarchy, before reprising his role in the third installment, The Purge: Election Year. Anarchy featured Leo as a damaged, mentally and emotionally unstable police officer as a result of his son’s death during the Purge of 2023. Leo’s arc in Anarchy is a simple one, as his survival depends on forgiving the man responsible for the death of his son.

The Purge: Election Year picks up 17 years after the events of Anarchy, reintroducing Barnes as Senator Charlie Roan’s head of security. Roan wants to win the presidential race and end the purge, because he believes it only benefits the American upper class. Unfortunately for her, America’s new founding fathers, the organization that brought the purge to our country, decided to revoke the immunity granted to senators for the 2040 purge.

With the anti-purge security system from the first purge movie and the protection of leo barnes from cricket, senator charlie roan decides to stay home the night of the purge, much to leo’s annoyance. When his home is inevitably overrun by Purgers, Barnes leads Senator Roan to hope for safety on the streets of Washington D.C.

After a long night of bloodshed and horror, Leo Barnes and Senator Charlie Roan arrive on the other side. Roan is elected president and her first major act in office is to abolish the annual purge. The election year comes to an end, and for 8 years, the United States enjoys a time of peace without purges.

purge 6 takes place 10 years after the eternal purge

all good things must come to an end, and that includes an in-universe america free from the grotesque joy of the purge. In 2049, The Purge returned in all its macabre glory with The Eternal Purge, which was released on July 2, 2021. The Eternal Purge focused on Purgers across the country, ignoring the Purge’s time constraint and continuing with the massacre, destruction and burning of the united states of america.

When the purge forever credits roll, America is on fire and millions of us citizens have fled across the Canadian and Mexican borders. America’s new founding fathers have disbanded, and any sense of order is a distant memory. Throw in a decade for the country to cook up, the return of Leo Barnes, and the stage is set for the sixth untitled Purge movie.

Another movie in the purge franchise is in development. Frank Grillo will play Leo Barnes, and James Demonaco will act as writer and (probably) director. no other creative talent is attached at this time. The Purge 6 will take place 10 years after Forever Purge in a version of the United States that is “tribalized” and divided into widely separated, seemingly independent states.

In the purge franchise, America is truly a nation reborn once again.
