Apparently, Eternals 2 is happening wonderfully, well at least according to Patton Oswalt, who appeared in the opening credits scene of the first film as Pip the Troll.

“they have announced that there will be a sequel to the eternals. chloé zhao will direct it,” he said in August 2022. “so hopefully there will be more starfox and pip adventures.”

There has been no official confirmation from marvel studios or disney, so take it with a grain of salt for now. could have been wrong as rosario dawson about a speculated reboot for the punisher.

Despite mixed reviews from fans and critics, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Eternals return, as the first movie is certainly setting up a sequel. zhao would also be dead set on returning, telling the playlist, “I’d be back in a second working with the marvel team.”

the future of the mcu has been presented, at least in part, and the eternal 2 were not part of the announcements at comic-con, but that does not rule anything out, since those focused on phase 5, for the most part .

With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about a possible Eternals 2.

eternals 2 possible release date: when can we expect eternals 2?

Since marvel hasn’t confirmed it yet, we don’t have a confirmed release date for Eternals 2, but we’ll be waiting until at least late 2024.

the mcu has a pretty packed phase 5 schedule, but there could be room for the sequel in phase 6 as we only know it will start with the fantastic four and wrap up with two avengers movies in 2025.

However, with d23 just around the corner, there may still be a surprise update waiting in the wings.

eternals 2 cast: who could return for eternals 2?

We’d expect most of the cast to return for the sequel if confirmed, but the first movie wasn’t without casualties.

salma hayek’s ajak was killed by deviants (thanks to ikaris’s help) and lead deviant kro (voiced by bill skarsgård) killed don lee’s gilgamesh.

after seeing the error of his ways, richard madden’s ikaris flew into the sun at the climax of the film (haha yeah), seemingly to his death. however, given their 7,000-year history, none of the deaths rule out a return in flashbacks.

That’s about it for kills, but lia mchugh’s sprite was turned human by sersi, potentially ruling out a return. if the sprite returns, it could well be that the paper is a new version of mchugh.

we can expect to see the rest of the eternals return, so they’re gemma chan’s sersi, kumail nanjiani’s kingo, brian tyree henry’s phastos, lauren ridloff’s makkari, barry keoghan’s druig, and angelina jolie’s thena.

kit harington will also surely return as dane whitman, potentially as the black knight, as hinted at in the film’s post-credits scene (more on that in a bit).

speaking of the credits scenes, the sequel will have an extra burst of star power in the form of harry styles, who made his mcu debut as eros aka starfox aka thanos’ brother in the scene from half credits.

However, he recently questioned his return to the mcu and said he wasn’t sure when he would make another movie.

patton oswalt, who voiced pip the troll, however, may return…unless he’s told news of the sequel has leaked.

eternals 2 plot: what will eternals 2 be about?

While the first film was heavily inspired by Jack Kirby’s comics, it largely told its own story, making it hard to look at the comics to know what will happen in the sequel.

Luckily, we can focus on the cliffhanger ending of the first film.

After defying their leader (and creator) Arishem and stopping Tiamut from destroying the earth, the Eternals go their separate ways and assume it’s all over for now. although they are very wrong since arishem takes sersi, kingo and phastos from the earth.

arishem tells them that he plans to look into their memories to judge if humanity is worthy of survival, just like in the comics where he is a celestial who judges if a planet’s civilization deserves to live or die.

for some reason, makkari, druig, and thena avoid arishem as they are aboard the eternals’ ship, the dome, and are on their way to tell other eternals what they learned about their true nature.

In the mid-credits scene, they talk about how Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos have “disappeared” and assume Arishem had something to do with it. Eros enters and arrives at the dome with promises that he can help them find his friends.

while eros and the eternals may appear in other mcu movies, this feels like a direct setup for the eternals 2, rather than another mcu project. The Black Knight may well join them when in the post-credits scene Dane is seen going to touch the Ebony Sword.

Speaking to digital spy, harington said he didn’t know what the future held, but he didn’t rule out returning as the black knight.

“the way i live my life is to try to live in the present especially with work so as far as i’m concerned i’m dane whitman in this movie and go see the movie and you might find out a little more,” he said.

“I wanted to be a part of the mcu and this franchise to have a future where there’s a little bit more to give than him being human, so I hope that happens in the future.”
