Actor Josh Brolin, who played House of Atreides’ warmaster Gurney Halleck, and whose life was at stake, confirmed that filming would begin in July during an interview with Live With Kelly & Ryan.
timothee chalamet and zendaya will also return after the open ending of part one. whether there are more movies after that depends on the success of the sequel and how villeneuve addresses the differences between the dune books and his movie.
Joining the cast of the new movie are characters like Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken!
In the meantime, read on for everything we know so far about Dune: Part 2, including release date, returning cast members, and plot details.
dune: release date of the second part
dune: part two will be released in theaters on November 17, 2023.
Shooting was confirmed to begin on Monday, July 18, 2022.
The sequel was initially set for release on October 20, 2023, but warner bros. delayed it a few weeks.
the film will receive a 45 day window of exclusivity in the united states for theaters only before it becomes available for streaming.
This is different from the first part, which was made available for broadcast in the US. uu. on hbo max the same day it opens in theaters.
production company legendary pictures and studio warner bros confirmed the sequel to the film dune: part two in October 2021.
Now that a Dune sequel has been confirmed, it looks like director Denis Villeneuve won’t waste any time getting the ball rolling on a sequel.
in fact, he told ign that he “would be very ready to go pretty quickly” after receiving the go-ahead from warner bros, having put a considerable amount of work into the sequel’s script.
continued: “To quickly go to a movie of that size, you still need to do sets, costumes, so we’re talking months. but if there’s ever a buzz and the movie gets the green light sooner rather than later, I’ll say I’ll be ready to shoot in 2022 for sure.”
Brolin confirmed this to be the case, stating that filming would officially begin in July.
While Dune: Part Two is set to complete the adaptation of Villeneuve’s original book, that doesn’t necessarily mean the film franchise will end there, as the director has also been interested in tackling a sequel to the novel.
“There is the second dune book, messiah of dune [also known as dune: messiah], which could be an extraordinary movie,” he told cbc radio canada. “I always saw that there could be a trilogy; after that, we’ll see. they are years of work; I can’t think of going any further.”
dune: cast of part 2
We can probably expect the following cast members and characters to appear in Dune: Part 2.
- timothee chalamet as duke paul atreides/muad’dib
- zendaya as chani
- rebecca ferguson as lady jessica
- josh brolin as gurney halleck
- stellan skarsgard as baron vladimir harkonnen
- dave bautista as count glossu rabban harkonnen
- austin butler as feyd-rautha harkonnen
- florence pugh as princess irulan corrino
- léa seydoux as lady margot fenring
- stephen mckingley henderson as thufir hawat
- souheila yacoub as shishakli
- charlotte rampling as reverend mother gaius helen mohiam
- christopher walken as padishah emperor shaddam iv corrino
- javier bardem as stilgar
Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson have been confirmed to return as Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, who narrowly escaped execution in the first film.
They found refuge in a Fremen tribe that counts Stilgar (Javier Bardem from Skyfall) and Chani (Zendaya from Spider-Man: No Way Home) among them, so both characters are expected to reappear in the sequel.
The brutal destruction of House Atreides left the fate of some of his closest allies up in the air, but we’ll also see actors Josh Brolin (Gurney Halleck) and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Thufir Hawat).
We’ll also see the return of the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard), his nephew Count Glossu Rabban (Dave Baptista), and the Emperor’s Truthful Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (Charlotte Ramplaling).
on the other hand, there were some big kills that will put several big names out of the running for now, most notably oscar isaac’s duke leto, jason momoa’s duncan idaho, and sharon duncan-brewster’s dr liet-kynes.
In the supporting cast, neither traitor dr wellington yueh (chang chen) nor piter de vries (the suicide squad’s david dastmalchian) made it out alive, creating two more vacant spots in the great cast of dunes.
It’s also a good thing because Villeneuve has some big characters to introduce in Dune: Part Two, including Baron Harkonnen’s capricious nephew, Feyd-Rautha, and the sinister Emperor, Shaddam IV Corrino.
Elvis star Austin Butler will play Feyd-Rautha, Hollywood legend Christopher Walken will play Emperor Padishah, while Oscar nominee Florence Pugh will play his daughter, Princess Irulan Corrino.
No Time To Die actress Lea Seydoux has also been confirmed to be cast as Lady Margot Fenring, a member of the Bene Gesserit and wife of the Emperor’s closest adviser.
souheila yacoub has also been cast as a gender-swapped version of the fremen character shishakli.
Other characters include Paul’s unborn sister, Alia Atreides, who will likely play a major role in the sequel and was glimpsed in visions in the first film.

florence pugh will play princess irulan corrino
Black Widow star Florence Pugh has been cast in the sequel in the role of Princess Irulan Corrino.
The character is the eldest daughter of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV Corrino and has been trained in the ways of the Bene Gesserit.
Princess Irulan plays a big part in the later Dune novels, so if they are adapted, we could see more movies with Pugh as the character.
austin butler will play feyd-rautha harkonnen
On the heels of his turn as Elvis Presley in director Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor Austin Butler will play Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.
The character, who was absent from the first film, is the youngest nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen whom he has been grooming to replace him as the next leader of the Harkonnen empire.
feyd-rautha is of similar age to paul and is seen to exhibit the ruthlessness harkonnens are known for, but proves to be something of an antithesis to our protagonist.
The famous role was played by Sting in David Lynch’s adaptation of Dune.
léa seydoux will play lady margot fenring
the main character and blue is the warmest color. actress léa seydoux has been cast in the film as lady margot fenring.
In the novel, Lady Margot is the wife of the Emperor’s closest adviser, Count Hasimir Fenring, and is a member in good standing of the Bene Gesserit.
if the movie follows the book, we’ll see lady margot trying to get closer to her new character, feyd-rautha harkonnen.
souheila yacoub to play shishakli
Climax actress Souheila Yacoub has been cast in the role of Shishakli in Dune: Part Two.
In the novel, Shishakli is a male member of the Fremen who belongs to the same tribe as Chani and Stilgar in Sietch Tabr.
the character, such as dr. liet-kynes in the first volume, has been gender-swapped for the film adaptation.
will shishakli be a vital ally for paul and chani?
christopher walken will play padishah emperor shaddam iv corrino
It has been revealed that Hollywood legend Christopher Walken will take on the role of the ruler of the universe known as the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV Corrino.
In the first movie, the Emperor is mentioned but not seen as he manipulates events on Arrakis to benefit the Harkonnens and destroy House Atreides.
The Emperor is in league with Baron Harkonnen and is cared for by his Truthful Bene Gesserit, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam.
we will probably also see the emperor and his relationship with his daughter, princess irulan.
dune: part 2 plot spoilers
*warning: possible spoilers for dune: part two*
The official plot synopsis for Dune: Part Two has been released by Warner Bros and Legend.
says: “this sequel film will explore the mythical journey of paul atreides as he joins chani and the fremen in a war of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.”
“Faced with a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he strives to prevent a terrible future that only he can foresee.”
the first dune novel is divided into three parts, titled dune, mua’dib and the prophet respectively, and the 2021 film adaptation is an abridged version of the first two, which means the story is far from being complete.
The final section of Dune is in many ways the most action-packed, as with all of his complex world-building out of the way, Herbert is able to put more emphasis on pushing his story forward.
Picking up where the first film left off, part two would likely begin with Paul and Jessica settling into their new life among the Fremen Sietch Tabr tribe.
after experiencing vivid visions of chani for a time before arriving on arrakis, the connection between her and paul only deepens as they become a couple and have a child together.
Meanwhile, Jessica assumes the respected charitable role of Reverend Mother of the Fremen she lives among, but doing so will require her to undergo a painful ordeal that threatens the life of her unborn child.
As Paul rises rapidly through the ranks of the Fremen to become their leader, the stage is set for an epic confrontation between his forces and those of the Harkonnens who so brutally drove them out.
It looks like the same would happen with Villeneuve’s adaptation, as the filmmaker hinted at starting work on a second film and promised even more spectacle than the first.
“If something like dune: part 2 happens, I’ll say it’s going to be a crazy game for me because I had the task of explaining this world to the audience,” he told the variety. “Now it is. explained, it means I can just have fun with movies.”
If you’re wondering if the movie is for family viewing, here’s more information on dune’s age rating.
How many dune movies will there be?
As explained above, Villeneuve doesn’t necessarily see his dune movie series ending with part two, as he has expressed interest in a trilogy incorporating Frank Herbert’s second novel, Dune Messiah.
Now that the sequel has been greenlit, who knows? If Villeneuve has his way, we could see at least three movies.
In addition, there are four other books after the initial two, though only the third includes the original central characters in prominent roles.

what happens in dune: messiah?
*warning: spoilers for dune: part two**
Released in 1969, Dune: Messiah takes place 12 years after the events of Dune, where Paul Atreides, now known largely by his Fremen name Muad’dib, took over as emperor after toppling the old regime.
However, his worst fears have come true, as by deliberately becoming a messianic figure for the Fremen people, he has led them to embark on a bloody religious war across the known universe, in which 61 billion people have lost their lives.
Now, the houses and political organizations he displaced during his rise conspire together to bring him down, identifying his Chani lover as a weak point ready to be exploited.
Other characters set to appear in the second book include Princess Irulan Corrino, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, and Stilgar.
what happens in the sons of dune?
*warning: spoilers for dune kids*
children of dune is the third novel in frank herbert’s epic sci-fi series, which villeneuve has yet to express an interest in adapting to film.
However, if there is an appetite for more dune stories after the completion of the proposed trilogy, it’s not hard to imagine Warner Bros moving forward with adaptations of the later books in the series.
children of dune sees another jump in time, this time moving nine years from the events of dune: messiah, who saw paul wander the desert blind, leaving his two sons in the care of the fremen.
However, they are not safe, as Paul’s sister, Alia, is envious of the twins because they have inherited their father’s prophetic visions of the future, while the Bene Gesserit and the Space Guild are planning to take children for their own purposes. .
This third entry in the Dune series sees a reduced role for Paul, as the focus shifts to his sons, Leto and Ghanima. at the same time, she also presents a very different version of arrakis, which has become a much more hospitable place.
however, this has come at the expense of the sandworms that inhabit it, endangering the planet’s spice production.
Other characters set to appear in the third book include Lady Jessica, Gurney Halleck, Princess Irulan Corrino, and Stilgar.
children of dune was previously adapted into a three-part miniseries on the syfy channel, starring james mcavoy and susan sarandon.
