In the 90’s, there used to be numerous rumors that various towns in Telugu states were haunted by ghosts at night. people used to write “o stres repu raa” on the walls of their enclosures so that ghosts would never enter their houses. Director Ashok Reddy infused fictional elements into this intriguing premise and made it even more intriguing with a tagline, “Fact or Fiction.” The movie hit the screens today and let’s see how it fared.
monica (diksha panth) is a writer desperately trying to get her stories published. in this process, an editor commissions him to write about the story “o sthree repu raa” that made various towns tremble in the past. Monica and her boyfriend (Ashish Gandhi) try various means to learn the mysteries behind this story. Monica finally finds her story after playing a game of planchet with the souls of the dead.
what is the mystery behind this story of ‘o sthree repu raa’? How are seenu (vamsi krishna) and kalyani (shruthi mole) linked to this whole thing? and how monica ends her story in all this chaos that forms the main crux of the film.
The intriguing story is, without a doubt, the highlight of this film. the director wrote two interesting parallel stories around the mystery “o sthree repu raa” adding some fictional elements. the opening scene of the movie is quite good and sets the right mood. the suspense “o sthree repu raa” has been maintained until the end.
the realistic love story between seenu and kalyani in the second half is quite impressive. all the actors did their parts quite convincingly. ashish and vamsi krishna are awesome. Vamsi especially gave a decent performance in the scenes leading up to the climax. both heroines are decent in the glamor departments.
The creators made a big mistake promoting “o sthree repu raa” as a horror movie. the horror part lasts no more than fifteen or twenty minutes. those who watch the movie expecting a horror movie will be disappointed. after the interesting ten minutes at the beginning, the movie winds its way through the first half.
the love story in the second half is too long. certain scenes seem repetitive. the songs are a big hindrance to the flow of the film. the concept of unraveling the mystery by playing planchet with the ghost is not convincing.
Although the director comes up with an interesting premise, he fails to narrate an exciting horror drama for two hours. the film’s lackluster script doesn’t help the proceedings either.
ghantasala viswanath gets an exciting background score. Manohar’s cinematography is decent and sets the mood for the love story in the second half. production values are pretty decent.
o sthree repu raa is a fictional movie based on the rumors of ghosts that haunted several telugu villages in the 90s. the movie can only be watched for its interesting premise and the way the suspense builds until the end . however, a lackluster execution, lack of riveting horror drama, and meandering scenes disappoint big time and make this movie a stale horror drama.
