When the deadly outbreak of the new coronavirus began in India, the critically acclaimed Malayalam medical thriller, Virus, was widely talked about across the country. Released in July 2019, the film was based on the deadly Nipah virus that wreaked havoc in Kerala in 2018. The film has been dubbed in Telugu as Nipah virus and had its digital premiere on AHA on December 4. let’s see how the movie is.

history:

The story takes place in Kozhikode, Kerala, where the Nipah virus outbreak has gripped the entire state. Zachariah Mohammad is admitted to the government medical college with severe cough and vomiting. he passes away even before the doctors can identify the virus from him. After a few days, the Akhila (Rima Kallingal) nurse is admitted to the hospital with similar symptoms. this makes the entire government machinery, including the state health minister and the district collector, involved in the mission of tracing the root cause. how the government contains the outbreak of the virus and the problems facing the families of the victims in society make for an exciting and emotional show.

positive points:

Director Aashiq Abu‌ presents a riveting thriller about the invisible virus that claimed dozens of lives in the Kozhikode and Malappuram districts of Kerala. The way he realistically depicts the emotional turmoil of victims and their families, the tireless determination of doctors to save their lives, and the government’s mission to prevent the spread of the virus deserves special mention.

As for the actors, even though most of the main actors are new to the Telugu audience except Revathi, they captivate the viewers with their sincere and natural performances.

negative points:

although aashiq abu‌ chose an excellent story, the script and the treatment he followed to narrate the story should have been quicker for an engaging experience. certain scenes in the first half should have been cut to add some pacing to the process.

technical aspects:

all technicians have done their best to help the director’s vision. especially, music composer sushin shyam’s soulful background score adds to the pensive mood. rajeev ravi is one of the best cinematographers in india and he proves it once again with his images perfectly assisted by shyju khalid. production values are decent even though most of the movie is centered around hospitals and government offices.

verdict:

The Nipah virus was a great test for humanity. the director’s thinking behind coming up with an emotional thriller that pitted this greatest adversary against each other should be appreciated. except for the slow pace in certain parts, the film is quite fascinating. Nipah Virus is recommended for those who appreciate emotional medical thrillers. the film will make a lasting impression, especially when the coronavirus pandemic has the entire world at its feet.
