Campy Movies: An Appreciation and Love for the Campy Cinematic World – Hollywood Insider

In the world of cinema, there are so many different types of movies that don’t just fall into the category of genre. we got movies like classics that are loved by most people like ‘the wizard of oz’, ‘jaws’ and ‘psycho’. And on the other side of that, we have movies that most people seemed to hate (but are still widely watched) like ‘movie 43’, ‘cats’ and ‘the devil inside’.

but, it also becomes an intersection between these two where a line of subjectivity comes into play that is prominent in all the movies. some people find classic movies potentially “boring” or somewhat not up to their standards, and some people love all considerably “bad” movies because they hit a soft spot in their heart. for example i don’t quite enjoy ‘citizen kane’ (but still find it to be a movie that deserved its awards) as much as the next person, but strangely i enjoy the live action ‘cat in the hat’ with my heart out even though most other people told me how much they almost hated it.

This element of enjoying the movies will always seem to be a part of watching movies, as a movie is not always made for everyone to enjoy; but of course it’s amazing when a movie can impact so many in such a beautiful and positive way. on the other hand though, it’s also quite nice when a considerably bad movie can make the audience remember the movie for how seemingly “horrible” it was in certain respects.
Now what if I told you that there is a category of movie that falls into these two elements between love and hate; such an interesting type of film but not a conventional cinematic masterpiece? well, fortunately, there is such a wonderful category of cinema; and features movies that quite avid moviegoers have come to know and love in the back of their minds: campy movies.
dive deeper into campy movies
cheesy movies don’t seem to have a straight forward definition of what exactly makes a movie ‘cheesy’; along with what the line is between a “bad” movie and a cheesy one. this is mainly because it’s not exactly black and white as far as how a movie can be considered cheesy, sometimes it feels like that’s all you can describe. a movie that is not horrible, nor an experience that is not a cinematic masterpiece, but something absolutely absurd and humorous in the best possible way.

but like the campy movies themselves, it’s hard to fully explain what it’s about doing with 100% understanding; Therefore, we enlist the help of Merriam-Webster to give us a more direct and textbook definition of “campy” to give us a more solid idea. On the website, campy is defined as “absurdly exaggerated, contrived, or affected in a generally humorous way”; and this is, frankly, the best and easiest way to describe cheesy movies.
the more exaggerated and somewhat humorous a movie is, the cheesier it is; besides implying uses of the sensibility that admires bad taste (and irony). this is what really makes it so nice to watch. this is something that is not easy to achieve without being on the verge of possibly making a film that would be considered “bad”; which is one of the main reasons cheesy movies deserve more love than they currently seem to get.
That said, campy movies can appeal to everyone in some way, no matter how big or small; there’s an element to them that creates a great sense of admiration for what the filmmakers have done for the film. there are notable movies that have been released in the movie world that are considered cheesy movies; some that you wouldn’t quite expect to be put into the campy category.

a crazy and exaggerated world
One of the best campy movies that many audiences know (and love) is one of the most iconic and frighteningly trendy musicals of our time: ‘rocky horror picture show’. the musical is wonderfully humorous and over the top with comedy that makes you giggle in the best way possible. The film gives campy movies a great reputation through its admiring self-conscious use of bad taste, coupled with seemingly tongue-in-cheek references to fantastically bad horror movies. another notable cheesy movie that also makes similar references to bad horror movies is ‘tucker & give him vs. evil’, which in turn makes it seem like a bad horror movie in itself. however, horror elements are not the only things found in well-known campy movies. Most campy movies tend to fall into the comedy genre; more or less, comedies about the darker side of things.
comedy is a great genre in film and sometimes it can always make or break the realm of really funny versus jokes that the audience misses. But, in the glory of campy movies, comedy is arguably the strongest contender in making a campy movie just perfect. Movies worth mentioning here involve ‘Death Becomes Her’, ‘Clue’ and ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’. But there is one director who is ultimately one of the greatest creators of cheesy comedy movies: John Waters.

when you search for “campy movies” you will most likely find that john waters movies tend to come up the most. his well-known movies that fall into the cheesy comedy category include ‘hairspray’, ‘serial mom’ and ‘cry-baby’; which, overall, are some of my personal favorites in the world of camping. while all campy movies are great in their own way, john waters seems to understand perfectly how to really achieve this campy element in her movies that makes the audience walk away feeling like she’s experienced a true campy movie >. . But then again, while john waters deserves credit for being able to pull off such a great use of camp in his movies (and for making so many of them), we still have to appreciate the rest of the filmmakers whose hard work went into creating other wonderful campy scenes. movies.
an appreciation of the ironically bad
all the different categories and elements within cinema always deserve praise and recognition for all that they bring to the public. and that’s why cheesy movies deserve this love too. Campy movies feel like a fun treat for viewers, and the filmmakers work so hard to get to this point where a movie isn’t “bad,” but something so absurd that you can’t help but adore it and still find it. weird at some points. Ultimately, even if a movie isn’t all that good, it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t get the love it deserves. cheesy movies provide great opportunities to enjoy them with your friends and family and laugh at the absurdity, and not take everything seriously for once.

we should love cheesy movies for all they are and all they will soon become. They fall into the realm of cult classics in addition to their campy elements, and should be recognized on much the same level that we recognize films like ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and ‘Casablanca’. And yes, that may sound weird, but we have to embrace the weirdness the cheesy world has to offer.
