With all the time travel shenanigans, it’s hard to keep track of Professor X and his cohort of mutant heroes, but our guide to the X-Men movies in order should clear up the time flow.

If you can’t save the world in bright yellow spandex, then you can’t save the world. For 22 years, the X-Men film franchise has delivered a plethora of X-Men movies, filled with questionable costumes, creative accents, and more blue characters than James Cameron’s wildest dreams. the x-men have been seen in print, on the small screen, animated, and in the minds of every kid who tried to jump off the roof of their car just in case they could fly (not a true story, don’t worry about that) .

Ever since Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness brought Professor X in the Yellow Chair back to us, fans have been wondering when the X-Men will get their next standalone movie. we have to imagine there are more x-men movies in the exploding gambit cards, but in the meantime why not rewatch the tangled timeline that is the previous 13 outings?

this list will be your guide through the xcu (x-men cinematic universe), with stops in the past, the future, the days of future past and also a little awkward in the 70’s where everyone is in hood – backgrounds for 2 hours.

the xcu has booted up and restarted a few times, but that will happen every time time travel is a plot point. so instead of just giving you a (boring) release list, we’re getting complicated, and this will undoubtedly be a controversial version of a chronological watchlist. If you want more wonderful Marvel content, check out our guide to the Marvel movies in order or our list of the best Marvel movies.

x-men movies in chronological order

  • x-men: first class
  • x-men: days of future past
  • x-men origins: wolverine
  • x- men : apocalypse
  • x-men: dark phoenix
  • x-men
  • x2: x-men united
  • x-men: the last stand
  • wolverine
  • deadpool
  • the new mutants
  • deadpool 2
  • logan

1. x-men: first class

  • release date: June 3, 2011
  • cast: james mcavoy, michael fassbender, jennifer lawrence

We are already starting our list with a disclaimer about the number one spot. If you want to get technical, then X-Men Origins: Wolverine has scenes set in 1845, but most of that movie doesn’t take place until later. That’s why First Class, set primarily during the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1962s, is your safest bet for the first chronological X-Men movie.

You’ll see the humble beginnings of the x-men team, as well as the burgeoning turmoil of prof x and magneto, watching as they go from best friends to deadly enemies.

fun fact – x-men origins: magneto was the original plan, but the first class took its place.

2. x-men: days of future past

  • release date: May 23, 2014
  • cast: hugh jackman, james mcavoy, michael fassbender

another controversial part of the timeline here, as the days of future past take place in both 1973 and “the future” simultaneously. With the return of the original and prequel actors, as well as some of the fan-favorite characters, days of future past promises action, confusion and truly horrendous hairstyles.

This mid-franchise take on the iconic comic book story was well received by critics and audiences alike, as it resonated with Marvel’s new cinematic style.

Fun Fact: For those of you who want a little more, check out “The Rogue Cut,” a version of the movie that adds Rogue to the main roster.

3. x-men origins: wolverine

  • release date: May 1, 2009
  • cast: hugh jackman, liev schreiber, danny huston.

In the blink of an eye and you miss it cameo in first class, you’ll see wolverine in a bar, telling prof x and magneto to “fuck off”. just a few years later, chronologically, we come to the wolverine origin movie, mostly set in 1979.

A series of flashbacks beginning in 1845 take us through nearly every major war Wolverine was a part of, until his character defined adamantium surgery. here we also have the first appearance of ryan reynold as deadpool, but the cursed version of the monkey’s paw: don’t worry, they correct their mistakes in the future.

fun fact: wolverine actor hugh jackman confessed his distaste for the movie. he felt that he didn’t delve into the character enough and said that it felt like a fourth x-men movie, with different characters.

4. x-men: apocalypse

  • release date: May 27, 2016
  • cast: james mcavoy, michael fassbender, oscar isaac

In Oscar Isaacs, the first of two different Egyptian Marvel characters, X-Men: Apocalypse sees the upgraded X-Men team battle the titular villain, Apocalypse. Another point of contention as this film begins with a sequence in 3600 BC but sees 1983 taking control of both plot and fashion choices. the reception of this movie split audiences roughly in half, with some loving the classic villain and others feeling it was overloaded with action. we will let you make your own decision.

Fun fact: Olivia Munn was a fan of her character, Psylocke, before filming, and requested that she wear the comedic purple outfit.

5. x-men: dark phoenix

  • release date: June 7, 2019
  • cast: sophie turner, tye sheridan, jennifer lawrence

closing the prequel movies is another attempt at the dark phoenix story. We will see Jean Gray become the phoenix again, but for this attempt we are faced with an alien invasion and another change in the mystical style. for this movie, she’s a soft cornflower blue, but her outfit is yellow…and red.

fun fact: this is the first x-men movie since 2000 that doesn’t include hugh jackman as a main character or in a cameo.

6. x men

  • release date: July 14, 2000
  • cast: patrick stewart, hugh jackman, ian mckellen

the movie that started it all! Set in the same year as its release (2000), this was the first official X-Men movie, if not the sixth chronologically. It can be a bit confusing to watch as many of the characters have changed and the timeline has been cut and re-joined multiple times since the release of this movie. But the nostalgia factor is high, and Sir Patrick Stewart hasn’t aged a day.

Fun fact: Although famous for their chess games in the movies, neither Patrick Stewart nor Ian McKellen knew how to play, a chess master was hired to teach them.

7. x-2: united x-men

  • release date: May 2, 2003
  • cast: halle berry, famke janssen, james marsden

Picking up where the last film left off, x2 takes place in the same year as the previous installment. colonel striker kidnaps prof x, and we’re all wondering “how will wolverine do this on him?” and in a shocking twist, he does. New characters include Lady Deathstrike and Nightcrawler. both pay their way with great fight scenes.

Fun fact: Openly gay actor Sir Ian McKellen worked with the production to make a scene in which the parents discover their son’s mutation as similar as possible to a conversation of ” coming out of the closet”.

8. x-men: the last stand

  • release date: May 26, 2006
  • cast: hugh jackman, halle berry, ian mckellen

the finale of the three original x-men movies, and this was the first attempt at the dark phoenix story. Jean Gray returns with her powers enhanced and ready to take on the new mutant cure. This is also the last time on this list that they will be part of the X-Men team. from here on out, it’s all spin-offs and alternate timelines.

Fun Fact: Kelsey Grammar was so interested in playing Hank McCoy/Beast, he auditioned for the first time in over 20 years.

9. the glutton

  • release date: july 26, 2013
  • cast: hugh jackman, rila fukushima, tao okamoto

does this movie exist? technically yes, but in an even more technical way, not at all. Due to the plot in days of the future past, the events of this movie were erased from existence, and if you want to watch it, it will be just for fun. Of course, most of this movie takes place in Japan, because Wolverine is a notorious nerd when it comes to the country. with some of his children/comic clones coming from there, depending on the universe.

Fun fact: In a bonus scene, released on Blu-ray, Yukio introduces Logan to his classic yellow suit, with comic accuracy. the scene was cut, much to the dismay of fans.

10. deadpool

  • Release Date: February 12, 2016
  • Cast: Ryan Reynold, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein

ryan reynold’s take on fourth wall smashing mercenary with his mouth is included in this list as it includes the x-men, colossus and negasonic teen warhead. With some brief shots of the X-Mansion, this movie earns its spot a little tenuously, but as the first R-rated mutant movie, it’s worth a watch.

Fun Fact: The Deadpool movie had been shelved for a long time, with Reynolds playing the character from Origins: Wolverine. when the test footage was leaked, the fan backlash was so great that the studio simply had to move on.

11. the new mutants

  • release date: August 28, 2020
  • cast: maisie williams, anya taylor-joy, charlie heaton

Taking place in the xcu, this film follows a group of mutants kept in a mental institution for the sake of their “safety”. Magik, Cannonball, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, and Mirage team up to escape their fate and take on their own troubles as well. If you love giant demon bears and some really puzzling villains, then this movie could be the X-Men experience for you. Although it was originally planned to be a 1990s movie, it ended up being made in 2017.

Fun fact: Originally planned as a horror trilogy, sequels seem unlikely as mutants are being incorporated into the mcu.

12. deadpool 2

  • Release date: May 18, 2018
  • Cast: josh brolin, Morena Baccarin, Ryan Reynolds

This film earns its place on this list a little more than its predecessor. with long scenes in the x-mansion, plus a cameo from the prequel x-team. It’s another complex web of time travel, with Josh Brolin’s “wire” jumping along the timeline to kill, save, and get ripped as hell. We also get a slew of celebrity cameos from Brad Pitt, Bill Scargaard, and more, not to mention the introduction of the fan-favorite dominoes.

In another meta-twist, Deadpool himself jumps back in time to make a host of continuity changes to both the movie chronology and the real world.

Fun fact: A third deadpool movie is in the works, so check back here to see how it fits into the x-men movie order.

13. logon

  • release date: March 3, 2017
  • cast: hugh jackman, patrick stewart, dafne sharp

The final movie on this list of x-men movies takes us to the year 2029, where mutants are all but extinct. this particular story comes from the “old man logan” comics. Introducing Wolverine’s clone Laura, or “x-23”. The film marks Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as a wolverine, and it was his most physically intense film. Logan is older, weaker, but no less dangerous, and the action sequences are some of XCU’s best.

fun fact: dafne kein (x-23) was too young to film some scenes inside a casino, they applied a green screen or used her body double who was over 18 years old.
