netflix nflx just released their newest blockbuster aspiring movie, the adam project, starring ryan reynolds, walker scobell, jennifer garner, mark ruffalo, zoe saldaña and catherine keiner. directed by shawn levy, just two years after his last free guy movie also starring reynolds, adam’s project is on the streaming platform since march 11 and has already been panned by some critics, though it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser . .

the adam project has all the nostalgic charm of the movies it references, namely back to the future and e.t. the extraterrestrial, in addition to star wars and, of course, 13 going through 30. but behind these references, or tributes, lies an action-packed science fiction film, full of humor and emotion, although sometimes too sentimentalized, about grief, the father-son relationship and one’s own relationship with oneself.

The Adam Project sees Ryan Reynolds play Ryan Reynolds as a pilot named Adam Reed, who meets his 12-year-old self while traveling back in time to 2022. Walker Scobell plays the 12-year-old version of Ryan Reynolds, Here called Adam, in a pretty convincing performance, capturing Reynolds’ annoying/witty banter (depending on his mood or taste). Young Adam is being bullied and regularly suspended from school, much to the dismay of his mother (played by a great Jennifer Garner), who begs the school principal for mercy for her son after losing his father less than a year ago. After asking his younger self how old he is, the middle-aged Adam sees that he has traveled to the wrong year. he was meant to go to 2018, but somehow ended up in 2022.

the adam project is built implicitly. the beginning of the movie never reveals the real reasons why adam travels back in time to his past or why he gets in contact with his younger self (something strictly prohibited in the time travel rulebook). weather). The opening sequence shows Adam in 2050 being chased and shot at by another plane before he flies into a wormhole, but the reasons for this are not explained until much later in the film. only when he finds his wife, laura (played by zoe saldaña), or rather when she finds him, does it become clear that she was the one adam was looking for. When he finds Laura, Adam (and by extension, viewers) learns the real reason he should have traveled back to 2018: to meet his late father, Louis Reed (played by Mark Ruffalo), and save the world from A power-hungry, money-hungry villain, Maya Sorian (played by Catherine Sharper).

Although the film flows implicitly, its narrative seems to be pulling in multiple directions. Is this the story of a man reuniting with his younger self, searching for his missing wife (the “love of his life”), correcting past wrong behavior toward a grieving mother, or meeting his dead father and has a chance to say something? last goodbye? The Adam Project is all of the above, which means none of it is explored in any real depth, leading to some shallow platitudes about love and pain.

one of the best things about this movie is the interaction between adam and his younger self. Reynolds and Scobell make a great duo, pulling each other’s strings with sarcastic remarks. there is great chemistry between the two actors. there is a sense that both young adam and older adam need each other to mourn the death of his father, louis. the presence of mark ruffalo adds another layer to the duo. The roles seem to be reversed when the two Adams finally meet Louis. Annoying younger Adam suddenly becomes wiser and more understanding than his older self.

many times throughout the film the precept that the historical timeline should not be altered is reiterated. this is the rule that films like back to the future establish about time travel. but what is the use of time travel if one of its fundamental rules is that the future must not be altered? why travel back in time if you can’t save a loved one from death? the climactic conclusion of the adam project would suggest that there is no point in time travel, apart from reflecting on the past of one’s life.

The Adam Project is an entertaining movie to watch with the whole family and has the potential to become Netflix’s next big hit. The film jumped to the top of Netflix’s top 10 list in every country in the world a day after its release on the platform.
