Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 sci-fi action film “Predator” is best remembered today for an incredible line: “Get to the choppa!”
You’ve probably heard the line from the movie before, but why are we still saying it today?
schwarzenegger, who played major alan “dutch” schaeferd in the film, actually spoke the straight line while yelling at the character “anna” to quickly board the helicopter after the predator killed the rest of his team. but with the thick European accent of the actor, he inadvertently turned out to be comical.
Since then, the line has become part of our general lexicon.
according to the urban dictionary, “get to da choppa!” means “that one is saying that he must achieve whatever goal he sets for himself. ‘getting the choppa’ is the act of succeeding in this goal and is the highest possible recognition.” the entry adds that “it’s used when there’s no need to mention where you’re going, everyone already knows where they’re going, so they just yell ‘go da choppa!'”
In the game world of warcraft, “get to the choppa” became an achievement badge “that could be unlocked once the player obtained a mechano-hog or a mekgineer’s chopper, both motorcycles,” according to knowyourmeme.
The phrase also appeared as an unlockable title in “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” once the player completes the “Chopper Gunner i” challenge by calling 3 Chopper Gunner helicopters.
in april 2009, the quote even appeared in a us article. uu. Library of Congress report entitled “Wise Guide to Helicopters”.
During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show,” host Jimmy Fallon had Schwarzenegger participate in a QVC cooking show skit in which the actor had to say his infamous line over and over again.
