Let’s be honest with you here: We don’t care what anyone says, sometimes we just want to see Jamie Dornan don (or doff) the suit of billionaire Christian Gray and become the dom of our dirty dreams. yes, yes, we know that the book and the movies are, in a way, problematic. but that doesn’t change the fact that we occasionally want to start an erotic romance and rely on our erotic desires. there is no shame in our game. And that’s precisely how we came to compile the definitive list of movies like Fifty Shades of Grey.
some of these movies are not as erotic as the adventures of christian gray and anastasia steele. some are even more so (prepare to blush). however, the general appeal is the same: as humans with sexual agency, we crave stories that serve as sexual provocations. the tension in some of the following movies like Fifty Shades of Gray practically feels like foreplay. so slip into something snug, slip into bed, and get ready for an evening of sultry cinematic tête-à-tête.
movies like fifty shades of gray to watch next
1. secretary (2002)
first of all, we’ll see everything with maggie gyllenhaal because she’s a fucking goddess. And in this movie, she’s a true tour de force as Lee Holloway, a young woman with a history of deep-seated emotional problems. While she recovers at home with her overbearing parents, she starts working as, you guessed it, a demanding lawyer’s secretary. Her name? me. Edward Grey, played by James Spader. that’s how it is! another curly gray mr. the two fall into a sadomasochistic relationship and, well, just watch.
2. the cook, the thief, his wife and his mistress (1989)
Let us set the stage for you: A stormy mobster named Albert Spica (played by Michael Gambon) acquires an exclusive French restaurant in London. And while that sounds magnificent, his brash nature continues to scare customers away. even his wife georgina (played by the always amazing helen mirren) can’t stand to be around him. Not surprisingly, his attention is drawn elsewhere: to a restaurant guest named Michael (Alan Howard). In full disclosure, this film has a dark undertone. but he’s gorgeous, sexy, moody, and, you know, all the things we love about christian gray and anastasia steele.
3. a dangerous method (2011)
It seems that the critics appreciated this movie more than the public, but we can give you three compelling reasons to see it at least once: michael fassbender, viggo mortensen and keira knightley. heck, we can give you two more: sarah gadon and vincent cassel. Basically, the entire cast is stellar in this racy drama about the early days of psychoanalysis. Fassbender plays Carl Jung, who treats a woman named Sabina Spielrein (Knightley) for hysteria. And you know how they treated hysteria in her day, right? so if you’re a history buff and wouldn’t mind seeing some buff people, add them to your queue.
4. lust, caution (2007)
if you like your erotic romance with a side of espionage, ang lee’s amazing lust, caution is your choice. Set during World War II, the film follows a secret agent (Tang Wei) tasked with seducing and then assassinating a Japanese puppet government official from Shanghai. But when he falls in love with the officer (played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai), things get complicated.
5. eyes wide shut (1999)
obviously, right? This is a Stanley Kubrick movie, so you know it’s going to blow your mind. and it certainly challenges him to consider the inner workings of the human psyche as he watches dr. bill hartford (tom cruise) and his wife alice (nicole kidman) explore sexuality in their marriage through an underground sex group. there’s an orgy and plenty of tense erotic scenes, yes, but the exploration of the couple’s dynamic is just as fascinating.
6. the beauty of the day (1967)
This movie may be in French, but its gripping plot is easy to follow. A beautiful housewife is bored with her husband and yearns for a sex life full of bondage and sadism. while her husband is away from her, she takes breaks from her luxurious life and enjoys herself in the brothels. She eventually, she meets a sexy gangster and her sex scenes are… magnificent.
7. friends with benefits (2011)
this movie is basically no strings attached, but with mila kunis and justin timberlake. is a story as old as time: two best friends of the opposite sex trying to stay friends while having “meaningless” sex. Kunis and Timberlake try to navigate their friends with benefits relationship, but things get messy, to say the least. Feelings are hurt, grand gestures are made, and love is finally discovered. oh, and the movie is filled with a ton of wacky sex scenes.
8. 365 days (202nd)
icymi, 365 days caused quite a stir when it came to netflix in 2020. is it exciting? Yes. Is the acting too dramatic and so terrible that it’s entertaining? your bet is based on the totally offensive premise that a woman who has been kidnapped by a man and held captive for a year could/should/should fall in love with him? Also, if none of that scares you, you may be into the film’s central mechanism of sexual domination. I just know that getting into this one is problematic in more ways than one. in other words, it will both warm and annoy you, whether for better or worse, depending on your threshold for this type of material.
9. the beautiful noiseuse (1991)
Are you ready to let your mind fly? This French erotic drama is almost four hours long. even more impressive? despite its staggering runtime, it still manages to hold the audience’s attention: It has a rare 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 83 percent. Now that you’re fully intrigued, let’s get to the premise. In the film, famous painter Edouard (Michel Piccoli) has long since given up painting and now lives in the country with his wife Liz (Jane Birkin). When his friend Nicolas (David Bursztein) pays him a visit, Edouard finds a new muse in Nicolas’s stunning girlfriend, Marianne (Emmanuelle Beart). With Nicolas’ encouragement, Marianne agrees to be Edouard’s model for an intricate nude portrait.
