The next list of horror movies for 2022 and beyond has been getting better and better. While we update this every month and are always sad to remove the terrifying excellence that came before, there’s no shortage of new additions to keep us heading to movies and streaming services to mainline even scarier. In a year that has already seen the return of Ghost Face, The Predator, and Leatherface, we are yet to see David Bruckner’s reinvention of Hellraiser, and a new Evil Dead movie is on the way.
it’s also exciting that streaming services are getting some of the best upcoming horror movies in 2022. shudder has one of the best found footage horror movies of the year, deadstream, coming in october and the roar athaug troll will appear on netflix before christmas. Throw in the surprise prequel pearl of Ti West and the finale of the new Halloween trilogy and there’s never been a better time to be a scary fanatic. so get ready to have some spooky dates on your calendar. here are the most exciting upcoming horror movies for 2022 and beyond.

The idea of an additional TI West movie is already exciting enough without Pearl being the “x-traordinary origin story” of Mia Goth’s elder, not to mention the infamous character of X earlier this year. Given the sheer amount of work required to film during the pandemic, West shot X back to back with Pearl and didn’t reveal his existence until X came out. “I came out of quarantine and said: ‘we are already building all these things, it is covid and we are in the only place in the world where it is safe to make a film. we have the whole ‘avatar 2’ team that is on break. we should do two movies,’” west told indiewire. “a24’s miracle was that they thought it was actually a good idea.” Going by the hilariously dark trailer above, Pearl is digging even deeper into horror-comedy territory than X as we go back to World War I to find out just how far the titular anti-hero was willing to go to make himself famous. spoiler: villains.

The problem with the idea of the perfect family is that there are always secrets. and sometimes those secrets involve a creature that a girl has hatched from an egg she found in the forest/tinja is a 12 year old gymnast who spends her life desperately trying to please her overbearing mother, but what she finds inside the Egg turns his family upside down. This Finnish horror directed by Hanna Bergholm looks as delicious as the poached eggs made by David Cronenberg. If you don’t want to see the trailer above, we won’t reveal what made its way into the world, but Bergholm knew he wanted it to be something real and tangible.
“I really knew I wanted this creature to be a practical effects creature, and not a cg character,” he told screenrant. “I wanted it to have a real physical presence, and I knew we needed the best possible person to be in charge of making this puppet.” He recruited stuntman Gustav Hoegen, who has been in charge of animatronics for Star Wars, Prometheus, and Jurassic World. “On the set, we had five puppeteers moving the puppet with rods, and Gustavo moved all the facial expressions and fingers with remote controls. that was actually very technical and very challenging, because it took several takes to make it look real.”

just when you thought it was safe to use your electric toothbrush… ok then smile, luckily it’s not a horror movie based on a dentist, but we’ll see a lot of pearly whites as poor dr. rose cotter witnesses death. of a patient and suddenly the world begins to smile ominously at him. there are more creepy smiles in the trailer above than we’d suggest seeing on a daily or even weekly basis. Rose seems to be on some kind of countdown before she, too, is taken by what drove her patient to bloody suicide and, somewhat understandably, she’s desperately hunting for answers. the trailer is standard fare right up to an excellent scare near the end and if there are a few more of these on the toothy cards, we’re interested to see what this not-so-happily can deliver.

Modern technology is always irresistible to the found footage genre, and after the success of 2020’s lockdown zoom, host, there are even more horrors depicting life in a social media world. On Deadstream, it’s streaming culture’s chance to shine as a disgraced influencer tries to win back his patrons and fans with a livestreamed night in a haunted house. he points out plenty of satisfying grainy camera angles as he sets up live streaming webcams around the property and switches between them on his ipad as the audience watches and comments. of course, he also summons a demon by accident. Honestly, it can happen to anyone.
This is the first film from husband-and-wife writing/directing duo Vanessa and Joseph Winter and it’s a genuinely brilliant skewer of streamer culture as well as a low-budget bloody game. There are some genuine scares, as well as sprinkling of Evil Dead-style goofiness, and plenty of laughs for all as Shawn, played by Joseph Winters, battles the supernatural inhabitants of the house. Even better is that after its debut screening as part of SXSW’s Midnight Collection, it’s been picked up by Shudder and will be available in time for the spooky season.

why are michael myers, ghostface, leatherface and candyman having fun going back to the 20’s? it’s only natural that hellraiser’s pinhead suffers from some serious fomo. The good news, but probably not for us, is that Clive Barker’s monstrosity returns from a direct descent into video depravity. Known for the terrifying film The Ritual of the Journey into the Woods, director David Bruckner finished filming his “reimagining” for Hulu and Clive Barker himself is in the role of producer.
however, this version of hellraiser is a bit different. The L Word: Generation Q actress Jamie Clayton has been revealed as the new Pinhead. As reported by THR, Clive Barker was all praise for the new version of her creations. “Having seen some of the designs from david bruckner’s new hellraiser movie, they pay homage to what the first movie created, but then take him places he’s never been before. this is hell on a scale i just didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the mythology of the story, but what excites me is their desire to honor the original while revolutionizing it for a new generation.”

If halloween kills pissed you off with its combination of pointless posturing and downright absurd ending, apparently we haven’t seen anything yet. In an interview with NME, Jamie Lee Curtis has revealed that there is more Anger to come for the pandemic-delayed trilogy finale. “So there’s one more movie to do and I know what it’s about, and it’s going to take people’s breath away,” he says. “It’s going to make people very angry and it’s going to be shocking because it asks a lot of questions. So that’s all I can tell you.” After the events of the last film, it will be interesting to see where David Gordon Green and his team take Michael Myers next. hopefully the reason we’ll be mad isn’t because jamie lee curtis was underutilized in a second movie in a row…

By now we all know the type of dining experiences represented on the menu. the michelin stars… the moss and algae harvested from local forests… the instagram lighting… the potential for it all to be an elaborate setup to kill you. Ok, maybe not the last one, which is where a sinister chef played by Ralph Fiennes comes in to mix things up a bit. anya taylor joy and nicholas hoult are a couple in search of a next-level dining soiree, but they grab a knife and fork for an altogether different epicurean nightmare. The dark comedy from the trailer above is already pretty delicious, so we can’t wait to see how it unfolds. oh, and it’s from one of the succession and game of thrones directors, so there are bound to be some unexpected twists on the menu.

before now, if we wanted to see a norwegian horror troll, we always had to rewatch andré Øvredal’s magnificent found footage troll hunter. netflix is about to change all that with troll. This comes from director Roar Uthaug whose Tomb Raider wasn’t much to talk about, but he was also responsible for the brilliant Norwegian disaster film The Wave. “troll is an idea that has been developing in my mind for over 20 years,” uthaug told variety. “I can’t wait to unleash this Norwegian monster on the world.” if the wave proved anything it’s that this is a director who, like roland emmerich, isn’t afraid to destroy everything, so when a giant rock troll wakes up inside dovre mountain, things probably aren’t going to have a happy ending …this could be a great excuse to watch troll hunter again in preparation.

These days you have to have a sequel! after the stratospheric success of scream in theaters in january, there was no way ghostface would rise and die with those kinds of numbers. team radio silence is back for more corn syrup and meta-horror with scream 2022 directors matt bettinelli-lopin and tyler gillett confirmed to be at the helm once again, and james vanderbilt and guy busick on script assignments. “Is this real life? Being able to once again collaborate with our friends on the next installment of the scream story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed to be able to continue playing in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created . is, as ghostface would say, an honor,” Vanderbilt and Busick said in a statement released by The Hollywood Reporter.
So far, Courtney Cox has been confirmed to return for the sequel, but then there’s the bad news. Neve Campbell has announced that the offer for her to return as Sidney Prescott was simply not right, stating (as reported in Deadline) “I will not be doing the next scream movie unfortunately. As a woman, I have had to work very hard in my career to establish my worth, especially when it comes to yelling. I felt that the offer that was presented to me was not equal to the value that I brought to the franchise. It has been a very difficult decision to move forward. To all my screaming fans, I love you. You have always been incredibly supportive. I will be eternally grateful to you and what this franchise has given me over the last 25 years.”
this passes the torch to the four remaining survivors of scream 2022 sam (melissa barrier), mindy (jasmin savoy brown), chad (mason gooding) and poor human tara (jenna ortega), who for scream 6 will try to start a new chapter in their lives only for ghostface to try to quickly end it once again. And it doesn’t make up for the lack of Sidney, but we do know that Hayden Panettiere will return as Kirby, the character from Scream 4, who has taken a lot of damage. every cloud, huh?
salem lot

just when you didn’t think there could be more adaptations of stephen king, another tome is added to the “time for a remake” shelf. and this time, he is a heavy hitter. For those of a certain age, one of the scariest moments of terror lurks in Tobe Hooper’s 1979 TV series Salem’s Lot when a vampire boy comes to a window asking to be let in…this means there’s no pressure to conjuring up gary dauberman, a staple of the universe, in both directing and writing duties. The good news is that since he is also responsible for the script for both parts, Dauberman already has good skills to become king. The similar “small town terror” theme of the Salem lot when a vampire hides in the old house on the hill could mean very good things. There has been no official reveal of a poster or trailer, but the previous art was revealed after a tie-in edition of the book was spotted online. The film was initially meant to be released in 2022, but since then, the new line added a new release date for 2023 and cruelly removed it again. As it is, you have a little more time to prepare your garlic.

If your takeaway thoughts from the defining horrors of hereditary aster and midsommar were “could have been longer”, then your new a24 gift will be right up your street. Master’s long-awaited “nightmare comedy” is apparently four hours long, but we have few details about what will actually fill all those minutes. What we do know is that it stars Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, and Michael Gandolfini, and the official plot describes it as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.” There’s no official release yet for this third slice of the horror lurking in Aster’s brain, but you can almost guarantee none of us will sleep well after that. four hours…
the dead evil rises

Just when you thought another classic horror series couldn’t be resurrected with a scary hand leaping through the grave floor, the evil dead appears. Excitingly, this isn’t a sequel to Fede Alvarez’s terrifying 2013 reboot, but rather a continuation of the first three classic films, with original Deadite creator and director Sam Raimi serving as executive producer. Bruce Campbell is not returning as Ash, but he is involved as an executive producer, and he and Raimi hand-picked filmmaker Lee Cronin to direct this new slice of the Splattery franchise.
Cronin debuted the atmospheric The Hole In The Ground in 2019 and proudly began filming Evil Dead Rise in New Zealand in June. that’s his twitter picture above. “The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at age 9,” Cronin told Variety. “I am excited and honored to resurrect the most iconic of the forces of evil for both fans and a whole new generation.” no pressure, read, better be wonderful…
the lalaurie mansion series

Whether it’s a good thing or not, we now live in a world where entire franchises are announced even before the first movie is released. The writers of the first two Conjuring films, Chad and Carey Hayes, have teamed up again and revealed an entire series of horror films revolving around the infamous Lalaurie Mansion in New Orleans. Once home to none other than Nic Cage, who reportedly only lasted one night of horrific screaming and banging into the night, this gloomy abode is said to be one of the most haunted places in the world. The good news is that if you’ve done your horror homework and watched the coven of American horror history, you’ll already know its most villainous resident.
Played by Kathy Bates on AHS, Madame Lalaurie was both a New Orleans socialite and a horrific 19th-century serial killer, responsible for the horrific torture, mutilation, and murder of several black slaves. Her secret was only revealed when a fire broke out in her mansion and firefighters discovered some of her victims barely alive in devilish states.
Not content with a single film, the Hayes brothers will tell several stories of the mansion throughout history, from its horrible beginnings to the present day. Furthermore, they are considering writing something from inside the house. “We love writing movies where we can tell real stories, incorporating moments that people can look up and find out really happened,” they announced in a press release. “With the lalaurie house we can do exactly that… there is a lot of documentation of a very dark and terrifying past of true events. Not to mention that after spending some time there, what we personally experienced was truly unnerving. We haven’t been this excited about a project since the conjuring!”
