It has become de rigueur that almost any movie is somehow a setting for a sequel. this is even more true when the movie is already a sequel/prequel/spinoff with a recognizable ip from a hugely profitable studio.
Yes, we’re talking about Disney and specifically Cruella, the origin story of the One Hundred and One Dalmatians villain best known for wanting to murder puppies. Regardless of his thoughts on the movie itself (we gave it two stars), it seemed like a foregone conclusion that we would get a sequel, just like we did with Maleficent.
and we were right! with the sequel now confirmed, how does cruella prepare a sequel? And what do we know about it so far? Well, we’ll tell you.
cruella 2 cast: who will return for cruella 2?
It’s a rock yes. According to the Hollywood Reporter: “Getting the stone back became a priority for the studio, which wanted to show it was talent-friendly and could compete with Netflix, according to a source.”
meeting stone is the creative duo behind the first film, director craig gillespie and scribe tony mcnamara. They’ll likely be joined by Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser as Jasper and Horace.
It would be a surprise not to see emma thompson as the baroness again, but it could be that her story ended with her jail sentence.
Whether the sequel decides to jump right into a remake of 101 Dalmatians or not, we’ll also see the return of Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Kayvan Novak as Anita and Roger, respectively, as they play major roles in 101 Dalmatians.
However, the one character we definitely want to see again in the sequel is Horace’s winking dog.
cruella 2 plot: what will cruella 2 be about?
We don’t know, but we can speculate based on what happened in Cruella. If you forgot about her, got distracted while watching, or didn’t make it to the end, we’ve handily summarized the biggest twists and post-credits scene.
The short version is that the film ends with the main villain, the Baroness (Emma Thompson) arrested for the murder of Estella (who did not actually die but parachuted to safety from the cliff).
the final scene of the baroness is when they put her in a police car, screaming that she will take revenge on cruella because she knows that estella and cruella are the same person (something that no one else has been able to deduce). it is this scene and not the post-credits scene that will likely lead to the possible sequel.
A sequel could see the Baroness escape from jail or be released, hell-bent on getting revenge on Cruella, who has taken over her home and renamed it Hell Hall (after the Disney original, of course). Horace and Jasper (Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry) would have to return, since they’re still his henchmen in One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
Speaking of which, Cruella has raised a huge issue: She never addresses Cruella de Vil’s fur obsession, but she still nods frequently to the fact that there are one hundred and one Dalmatians (and thus her plot line). ). In addition to Horace and Jasper, we also meet Roger and Anita.
Roger is the baroness’s lawyer by day (until she fires him) and a pianist by night, struggling to make it as a musician. anita is a photojournalist for a tabloid-style newspaper, and it turns out she’s also an old school friend of estella/cruella (this last fact is from the original movie).
In the post-credits scene, Cruella gifts Roger and Anita, who have never met, Dalmatian puppies: Pongo and Perdita. this further cements the bond between cruella and roger and anita, but also distorts her relationship with the eventual 101 puppies that will be born.
It’s really diabolical to give someone a dog and then kill that dog’s puppies. so how is cruella 2 going to get around that, without leaning heavily on the cruella we all know? is an enigma.
One option is that the fugitive baroness’s plan to get back at cruella is to somehow frame her for the cub murder. while the first movie didn’t focus on the fashion industry in any real way (besides featuring amazing costumes), a sequel could explore the dilemma between real fur and faux fur with cruella at its core.
The problem this presents us with, however, is that this is a massive retcon of one hundred and one Dalmatians in which there is no mercy surrounding the fact that Cruella’s entire ruse is the murder of puppies for a coat. . there’s no real way around that fact, and any reconversion of the 1960s original would feel fake and downright weird.
It remains to be seen how disney plans to continue with a villain who will eventually want to kill puppies, but eventually, they will hit that wall. what they do then is a mystery to all of us, but we are reminded that the cliché ‘let dogs sleep lie’ exists for a reason.
