the end of the “be nice, rewind” era

It may surprise you (maybe not), but the last movie to be made on vhs was released more than 10 years ago. The year was 2006 and the world was well on its way to the digital boom with dvds enjoying a decade under their belts and blu-ray newcomers already filling store shelves, and what would become the future of smartphones with the apple ipod in 2007.

Looking back now, it’s hard to believe that people used to go to a physical vhs (rip blockbuster) tape rental store, walk, actually walk, through new releases and other genres in an attempt to find something to watch. then when they got home they would probably have to rewind the tape before watching it because the last person who rented it didn’t (you know who did too). it was a shopping model that lasted decades and a time lost but not forgotten by those who were lucky enough to participate in the search for rentals.

but with the vhs era firmly in the past, what were the last movies to grace the home entertainment player? Better yet, what were the latest vhs movies by most popular genres to sum up the latest vhs player hurrah?

but first, let’s start with the last official hollywood production… the year was 2006.

a history of violence

It was 2006, and Vigo Mortensen was only a few years away from his infamously defining role as Aragon in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Trading his sword for a gun, Mortensen plays a former hit man turned quiet family man. It also stars the typically wholesome Ed Harris in one of his most sinister villain roles at the helm of a hair-raising and gruesome action-thriller that will forever be remembered as the last great Hollywood movie released on VHS.

horror – saw ii

jigsaw brought his “serial killer” (in quotes because he never physically killed any of the victims himself) back in this bloody sequel that saw a group of apparently connected, poisoned strangers trying to escape from a house closed full of traps. intended to teach them lessons on how to appreciate the life of holiness. not as good as the original, but not as bad as the other 6 sequels that would go on to pave the way for the era of gore and torture horror movies.

comedy – just friends

before ryan reynolds made audiences laugh as the raunchy anti-hero clad in skintight black and red leather in deadpool or troll social media platforms with his hilarious posts, he sported a fat suit and mouth retainer, still raving to the public. up in just friends. if you haven’t seen it, watch it. you’ll laugh, guaranteed.

war – jarhead

Taking on the more psychological side of war, Jarhead stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War. Anyone who thinks war is strictly physical has clearly not seen this intense mental war drama. warning: don’t expect a lot of action and combat, this movie is more about the psychological scars of war.

thriller/black comedy – ice harvest

what could be more fun than a shady lawyer and a strip club owner paired up to steal dirty money from the local wichita, ks mob? It’s the peak John Cusack and Billy Bob Thorton, and a staggeringly hilarious performance from Oliver Platt that make this crime thriller a dark and comedic mess. It didn’t garner much box office clout during its limited theatrical run, but if you’re a fan of dark comedies like Witches or Grosse Pointe Blank, you’ll enjoy Harvest Ice.

family drama – yours, mine & ours

yours, mine & ours was like a modern version of brady’s group on steroids. With 18 kids in tow, this remake of the 1968 movie of the same name (hmm… so maybe Brady’s crew copied them, not the other way around?) tells the story of two single dads with a boat full. of children who fall for each other and have to deal with the consequences of 18 children in one house. as you can imagine, hilarity and drama ensue.

drama/romance – pride & prejudice

this film with the title of kiera knightly is the retelling of jane austen’s infamous 1813 novel of the same name. is a period film that follows five English sisters as they grapple with time-sensitive issues of marriage, mortality, and misconceptions in the early 19th century. basically, it’s a glimpse into the unfair truth of what it was like to be a woman.

action – dominoes

kiera knightly was apparently busy headlining movies in the mid-2000s, landing on this list with another movie, albeit a totally different one than pride & prejudice. In Dominoes, the gentleman plays a model turned bounty hunter…yeah, not even acclaimed director Tony Scott could save this one from her.

sci-fi action – doom

long before dwayne “the rock” johnson became the new arnold schwarzenegger of today’s action-packed summer blockbusters, he was barely setting foot in hollywood. In February 2006, Doom, the video game made into a film adaptation, was released on VHS. They tried to achieve the proprietary first-person perspective that made the game so groundbreaking in the early ’90s. Let’s just say it was doomed. Let’s just say he was doomed to fail, but it certainly didn’t stop the rock from landing bigger action star lead roles.

adventure – the legend of the fox

Antonio Banderas donned the black cape and mask again for this adventurous sequel to the 1998 smash hit, The Mask of Fox. it was entertaining and funny, but a classic movie? No. unfortunately just another sequel that doesn’t live up to the hype of its original. maybe it came out five years too late or maybe the fox just doesn’t have the pull it once did in hollywood.
