Sarvam thaala mayam movie review

the talented director, rajiv menon, returns after a long period with his new film, sarvam thaala mayam. the movie with gv prakash as the main lead has hit the screens today. let’s see how it is.

history:

peter(gv prakash) belongs to a backward class that makes the classical mridangam instrument. After wasting his life on fan wars, Peter somehow develops an interest in learning Karnatic music. He strives to join the school owned by the prestigious Karnatic Guru (Nedumudi Venu) but fails to get a seat. he follows his instinct and somehow gets a place in his camp. he trains hard to shine, but due to a fight involving his batchmate, his guru kicks peter out of school. The rest of the story is about how Peter solves his problems and gains the respect of his guru.

positive points:

musician turned actor, g v prakash has turned out to be quite the actor these days. he perfectly plays the role of the young musician and is magnificent with his body language and his emotions. The legendary actor, Nedumudi Venu, is magnificent as the Karnatic music guru and holds the fort most of the time. all the scenes of him with gv prakash have turned out quite well.

It was great to see the vineeth actor of yesteryear in a very good negative role. he, as gv’s teacher full of jealousy, has done an excellent job in the film. The staging of the film is quite realistic as the background music and score by R Rahman are very good. the movie has a decent first half and the last half hour is interesting. Tamil star actor Divya Darshini is also apt as the cunning TV host.

negative points:

While not a demerit, the film has an art-house flavor. the movie is full of karnatic keerthanas and has many scenes where the instrument being played may put off a certain part of the audience.

The pace of the movie is also slow and takes its own time to get to the interval point. the length is also an issue as the film is very long and the scenes showing the lead couple hint could easily have been edited out. plus, the film’s story is old school and has been rehashed to suit today’s sensibilities.

technical aspects:

main credit must go to a r rahman as he sets the mood with this classic touch on the score. all the songs have been well composed and the last climactic episode where the mridangam contest is shown is impressive. the production values are top notch and the dubbing done is excellent as well. dialogue is crisp and so was the camera work showing the movie in realistic light.

as for the director rajiv menon, he has narrated the film in his own style and adds a lot of drama to the proceedings. he takes you into his own world of karnatic music, how gurus are being exploited and how things are changing in today’s music world. but in all of this, he narrates the movie at a very slow pace which can affect the overall viewing.

verdict:

Overall, sarvam thaala mayam is a film strictly for a select audience. the proceedings have the feel of an art film and take their own time to grow with you. as the movie has old school charm, the box office prospects will be very poor. all those who like musical dramas will like the movie, but for the regular Telugu audience, the movie will be a below average view this weekend.
