Hammerstein’s

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II were a successful musical theater writing duo in the 1940s and 1950s. And their Broadway shows brought in a whopping thirty-four Tony Awards! Below is a complete list of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic and innovative musicals, arranged chronologically.

oklahoma!

musical type: golden age (1943)

oklahoma! It was the first private collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein as a duo. (To see the first real R&H collaborations, scroll down to “Lesser Known Musicals” below!) The show was a huge Broadway hit, with over 2,000 performances! it later received multiple revivals and an Oscar-winning film adaptation.

Carousel was another immediate hit, running for 890 broadway performances. It has been revived, made into a movie, and was a personal favorite of Richard Rodgers.

allegro

Unlike the previous two musicals, Allegro opened on Broadway to mixed reviews. it has rarely been revived since.

South Pacific

South Pacific was another immediate Broadway hit, running for over 1,900 performances and winning a Tony for Best Musical! still receives regular revivals today.

the king and I

The King and I was another huge and immediate Broadway hit for the duo. The show also won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1952.

me and juliet

me and juliet was considered a moderate success after a year of running on broadway. it has rarely been revived since.

impossible dream

pipa dream was rodgers and hammerstein’s seventh collaboration. and while the show wasn’t a flop, it wasn’t a financial success for the duo.

flower drum song

After Flower Drum Song’s Broadway performance, it moved to the West End in 1960. A film adaptation followed in 1961.

The Sound of Music, one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most popular musicals, won five Tony Awards and was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning film!

State Fair

musical type: 1945 film/pre-contemporary musical (1996)

The State Fair was written for the screen in 1945 and later adapted for the stage. it opened on broadway in 1996, but the response was disappointing.

Cinderella

musical type: 1957 film/contemporary musical (2013)

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella was written for television in 1957 and adapted for Broadway in 2013. It was nominated for nine Tony Awards and won one.

no strings attached

no strings is the only broadway score for which richard rodgers wrote both the music and the lyrics. It was also the first musical he composed after the death of Oscar Hammerstein II.

I hear a waltz

Can I hear a waltz?was the first and only collaboration between richard rodgers and stephen sondheim. the production received mixed reviews.

two by two

another show with mixed reviews, two by two opened in 1970 on broadway and ran for ten months.

rex

Unfortunately, Rex was a disappointing last Broadway opening for Richard Rodgers. However, six months before his death in 1979, she received the Lawrence Langner Memorial Award for Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in American Theater for his ensemble work.

I remember mom

I remember that Momma premiered in 1979, but unfortunately it was not well received by the public, who found the series too old-fashioned for their liking.
