Mark Wahlberg was the ‘Uncharted’ movie’s OG Nathan Drake

Uncharted went through years of development before it finally hit the big screen in February. that hell included several mangled scripts and changes to the cast, the writer’s room, and the director’s seat. The first actor attached to the role of Nathan Drake was Mark Wahlberg in 2010. At the time, Wahlberg confirmed that David O. Russell had agreed to work on a script based on the first game in the unknown franchise.

“I’m obviously into whatever david wants to do, but the idea is so off the charts: robert de niro is my father, joe pesci is my uncle,” actor father stu told mtv, according to kotaku. “it’s not going to be the watered down version, that’s for sure.”

A few months later, Russell left Uncharted for Silver Linings Playbook and Neil Berger took over. then the movie fell apart a bit as it went through a few more writers and directors. Rafe Judkins eventually reinvented the script along with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

The movie would serve as a prequel to the games, so Uncharted needed a younger actor: Tom Holland. however, in 2019, wahlberg re-signed to play victor sullivan opposite holland.

chris pratt turned down the role of nathan drake

During the limbo period between the casting of Wahlberg and Holland, Sony approached actor Chris Pratt to play Nathan Drake in Uncharted. however, as the hollywood reporter pointed out in 2014, he turned down the role. it is not clear what was his reason for rejecting.

for what it’s worth, even nolan north, the voice actor for nathan drake in the unknown games, recommended pratt for the role. Speaking to Daily Star in 2016, North said the Star Guardians of the Galaxy would “do him justice.”

“He’s vulnerable, he’s kind of funny, he’s like that hero with a smirk, smug and confident. That scene when he says ‘I’m Starlord,’ it’s such a Drake moment,” North said.

nathan fillion really wanted to play nathan drake in ‘uncharted’

In 2010, Castle star Nathan Fillion took to Twitter to express his interest in playing Nathan Drake shortly after Russell signed on as director. fans launched a vigorous social media campaign to get the role. Unfortunately, Russell never considered fillion. He eventually went on to play Nathan Drake, but not in the official Uncharted movie. instead, it was a 14-minute fan-made film that received positive feedback from viewers.

Last year, Fillion told Gaming Bible that he didn’t regret seeing Holland chosen as the Treasure Hunter.

“My only regret is that we had to wait so long for someone to do something so we could see some unknown stuff,” said fillion. “Other than that, I think all my boxes have been checked. I’m really excited to see what they do with it. I love movies, and those guys have never let us down; tom holland, come on, mark wahlberg. We’re going to have a good time.”

uncharted is now streaming on netflix.
