emily elizabeth (darby camp) and clifford have a lot in common. clifford is a little puppy who was separated from his family. he is alone and scared. Emily is a new student at her school in New York City. she is having her own struggles, being harassed by the “bad girls”.

clifford and emily need each other, and mr. Bridwell (John Cleese) is able to see it. Mr. Bridwell can best be described as a magical man who rescues animals. His name and character is a wonderful tribute to the author, Norman Bridwell.

exceptional cast

camp darby is going places y’all!! she is phenomenal as emily elizabeth and she plays the part perfectly. she may be remembered from the Christmas Chronicles and the Big Lies. expect to see much more of her in the future.

jack whitehall plays emily’s uncle casey, who has a reputation for being irresponsible and impulsive. Jack even referred to Casey as a giant boy and said that he could relate to his character because he is a bit of a man himself. You may remember Whitehall from his role as a scene stealer on Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

Uncle Casey and Emily Elizabeth are the perfect couple! Casey will keep you rolling with uncontrollable laughter, while Emily brings the sarcastic growl. her characters really bring out the best in each other.

everyone’s been talking about that giant cgi red dog. There’s been some flak about how Clifford appears on screen, and to be honest, I wasn’t entirely sold on my first look. I will say though that while watching the movie the cgi animation works. clifford looks very royal. I also love how they captured his expressions. you could really feel clifford’s emotion.

That being said, we all know that sometimes there are certain hidden elements in movies that can make parents give up. Here’s what parents need to know before their kids watch Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is rated PG by the MPAA for rude humor, thematic elements, and mild action. It has a duration of 1 hour 37 minutes. while the length of time is the sweet spot for the little ones, how long did they keep it pg? let’s break down those “theme elements” and take a closer look.

violence

When “mild action” is mentioned, some level of violence can usually be counted on. there were some scenes where our characters were in moments of danger. Clifford almost gets hit by a car and there is a chase scene where the “bad guys” try to capture Clifford.

A character claims to be a wizard and mentions cutting another character in half. there is a man hanging from a building and some cruelty to animals is shown.

other scenes involve hitting, punching, and throwing objects at others. tranquilizer guns are also used.

language

the language of clifford, the big red dog, is very smooth, thankfully. no profanity, however I did catch the use of the words “sucks” and “monster”. freak also referred to a child.

sensitive and adult content

There’s plenty of bullying going on in Clifford the Big Red Dog. emily elizabeth is a new student at her school and her classmates are not very nice. in fact, one of them tells him: “you are an accident. you shouldn’t even be here. that’s pretty harsh and certainly has the potential to be a trigger for some kids.

The death of a parent is briefly mentioned, as well as homelessness.

There is a bit of your usual humor. for example, clifford sniffs someone’s butt and you also see his butt crack. Clifford also urinates on a tree and splashes on people. Another scene, shown in the trailer, is where Clifford accidentally licks a smaller dog and regurgitates it in return. Of course, kids will find these scenes amusing, but parents always appreciate a heads up.

age recommendation

saw clifford the big red dog with my 7 year old son. and as i told darby and jack at the press trip, he is seriously the harshest critic i know. avery doesn’t stop. ever. if he doesn’t like something, he’s not afraid to let you know. he refuses to hide it. sometimes I envy his transparency, because he really doesn’t care what other people think. he is honest to the core. avery loved clifford. seriously, I loved him. he was laughing a lot and then he was talking about all his favorite scenes. can’t wait to see him with his older brother.

clifford the big red dog is a wonderful family movie. I really feel that all ages, young and young at heart, will enjoy this movie. has something for everyone. I would recommend it for ages 6 and up. Younger children who feel good during the movies and are familiar with the book series may also like this one. just keep in mind that it’s live action and sometimes those little guys do better with animation.

I expected to enjoy clifford the big red dog, however I didn’t expect to love the story as much as I did. it was really moving and packed with so many great messages that kids and adults need to hear. Clifford teaches us to celebrate our differences. they are what make us who we are. Why be ordinary when you can be extraordinary? big Love. big adventure big heart. clifford, the big red dog, teaches us to believe in magic and in ourselves. this is one family movie you don’t want to miss.
