not surprising. Batman was released on March 4, 2022, and Reeves’ dark remake of the iconic Gotham City superhero broke box office records in its opening weekend. It went on to gross $134 million domestically, making it the second-biggest release of the pandemic era after Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $260 million in December 2021. It was the biggest weekend ever. for warner bros in five years and the best start for filmmaker reeves.

“It’s fun to see audiences really embrace the movie,” Jeff Goldstein, president of national distribution for Warner Bros., told Variety. “Because the film is three hours long, it became an appointment to see. that bodes well for his career on the big screen. It helps that word of mouth is so strong.”

Batman takes place just two years after Bruce Wayne’s journey as Batman as he descends into darkness to track down a new enemy: The Riddler (Paul Dano). Pattinson joins a star-studded cast that includes Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon.

The film’s ending teases an intriguing future for the characters and for Gotham City, leaving plenty of room for more stories in Robert Pattinson’s Batman universe.

will there be a sequel to batman?

yes! warner bros has officially announced that there will be a sequel to batman at cinemacon 2022.

“matt took one of our most iconic and beloved superheroes and delivered a new vision”, warner bros. chief cinematographer toby emmerich said during the panel. “mat reeves, rob pattinson and the entire team will take audiences to gotham city with batman 2.”

Reeves added: “I just want to echo what Toby said and thank you all for your tremendous support of Batman. We could have gotten this far without the faith, enthusiasm and hard work of everyone in this room and their incredible teams. here around the world. every part of this journey has been exciting for me as a filmmaker and a huge fan of this character, and I’m excited to be back in this world for the next chapter.”

In February 2022, Reeves told The Independent that he didn’t create Batman with a sequel in mind, but would like to tell more stories with this iteration of the character.

“We’re already telling other stories in the streaming space, we’re doing stuff on HBO Max, we’re doing a penguin show with Colin [Farrell], which is going to be great,” Reeves said. “And we’re working on other things as well, but we’ve started talking about another movie.”

Speaking exclusively to radiotimes.com in March, producer dylan clark said the creative team “inevitably” had ideas about sequels, but remained relatively quiet about what those ideas might be.

“do we have sequel ideas? it’s inevitable that you will, because you’re going to start saying, you know, wouldn’t it be great if… you know, what we haven’t seen yet? and, you know, we haven’t enough of alfred in this movie, or, you know, gordon is going to do this in his career. so, you know, with 80 years of batman in canon and all these great comics, there are multiple stories that are just exciting.”

He went on to say that it’s too early to discuss details of the sequel given that Batman just landed in theaters.

“We’re really focused on making sure this movie opens in theaters in the best way. And if that happens, and we’re rewarded for doing a sequel, then we’re going to be the luckiest guys on the planet.”

Fans may have to wait for the sequel to materialize, but thankfully it’s confirmed, and in the meantime we’re looking forward to the HBO Max spin-offs.

and, as mentioned above, there’s also talk of a show exploring colin farrell’s oswald cobblestone/penguin.

sadly, it looks like it will be years before we see pattinson don the cape again.

producer dylan clark recently revealed that batman 2 should be out in 2027 at the latest.

In an interview with comicbook, he revealed: “I’ll go on record and say it will be less than five years.”

robert pattinson and zoe kravitz will reprise their roles as billionaire bruce wayne aka batman and selina kyle aka catwoman in batman 2, confirmed at cinemacon 2022.

pattinson recently discussed his intentions for the trilogy.

Speaking to Empire, Pattinson noted, “I’ve sort of mapped out where Bruce’s psychology would grow in two more movies. I’d love to do that.”

also confirmed that if warner bros. were to approach him to reprise his role once or twice more, I wouldn’t hesitate to say yes.

“I’d love to do it,” Pattinson said, while producer Dylan Clark added, “As the first independent Batman in 10 years, the hope is that we can lay the groundwork on which to build stories.”

There’s also plenty of room for further character development when it comes to Selina Kyle (Big Little Lies’ Zoë Kravitz), who is clearly still developing her alter ego from Catwoman into Batman.

same goes for detective james gordon (westworld’s jeffrey wright), who is just a lieutenant in batman rather than a commissioner as he’s better known.

Sadly, John Turturro is unlikely to return as a Falcone after he was shot dead by antagonist The Riddler/Edward Nashton (Paul Dano), and so does Peter Sarsgaard as the late Da Gil Colson.

However, we wouldn’t be surprised if Colin Farrell ends up returning as a penguin for the inevitable sequel and capitalizing on his role in the first film.

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Farrell opened up about his small role.

“I’m only in this for five or six scenes, so I can’t wait to see the movie because my presence won’t ruin it,” he said. “Really, it’s a gift to me. I’ll feel a little awkward for the damn nine minutes I have, and then the rest, I can’t wait to see how [matt] brought this world to life.”

Following Falcone’s death, Penguin is in a great place to take over Falcone’s drug operation in a sequel.

Dano is also likely to reprise his role as the riddler.

“If they call me back in Gotham, I’ll be there,” Dano recently told radiotimes.com when asked about possible sequels.

pattinson has also shared which batman villains he would like to see tackled next in the series.

“I would love to do something like the court of owls,” the actor told den of geek, adding, “there are elements of batman that are kind of horror and I think it really feels quite new to batman.”

pattinson has also mentioned the killer calendar man as a possible villain, as well as mr. freeze.

Reeves recently told Collider that he wanted to explore a more “grounded” version of Mr Freeze, explaining, “From my point of view, I’m drawn to finding the grounded version of everything. So that would be a challenge for me. in an interesting way to try to figure out how that could happen, even the idea of ​​something like mr freeze, that’s a great story, right?

“I think there’s actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really cool.”

When asked if there were any specific comics he’d like to see adapted for a sequel, producer Dylan Clark was rather more vague.

“I think it’s incumbent on us to create new stories that are true to the comics that people know and love,” he told radiotimes.com. “so, you know, in this one, robert read all the comics and there were certain things that we borrowed from various stories.

“but really, matt wanted to create a unique form of batman and create a unique story. and so my hope is that people say, ‘oh, that’s from the long halloween, that’s from the first year, it’s a little of is this a killing joke? and is that arkham asylum there? those things are important to us, but really for us we wanted to make our own story.”

It’s too early for a trailer, but now that a sequel has been greenlit, fans may not have *much* to wait.
