after nani’s “v” and anushka’s “nishabdham”, venkatesh’s “narappa” is the top telugu film to be released on ott space. The film would be released in theaters in May 2021. Due to the second wave of coronavirus, it is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Story: The story takes place in the 1980s in a village in the Ananthapuram district. A poor farmer, Narappa (Venkatesh), flees into the forest with his youngest child, Sinnappa, to hide in a safer place. because the 16 year old sinnappa (rakhi) murdered a landlord to avenge the death of his brother munikanna.

Fearing that her son has no future, Narappa takes him into the woods. Narappa plans to blame him and surrender to court when things calm down. the owner’s men are also on the lookout for sinnappa to kill him.

In sinappa’s eyes, narappa is a ‘weak’ person. but he was a fierce and short-tempered person in his youth.

what made narappa leave his violent past behind? And how far would she go to protect her son and her family?

Artist Performances: Venkatesh appeared in two dimensions, that of an aged narappa and his young self. venkatesh has given a superb performance as the older character, a realistic portrayal that stays with us. A mature Narappa, Venkatesh holds the film for the most part. But as a younger Narappa, Venkatesh seems out of place in his surroundings. Wearing designer dresses, appearing as a handsome Telugu hero, Venkatesh misses the mark. this is a major turnoff.

priyamani as narappa’s wife has put in a solid performance. But the scene stealer is the new actor Raakhi, who played Sinnappa. His diction and natural acting are perfect.

Karthik Ratnam as Venkatesh’s eldest son, Rajeev Kanakala as his brother-in-law, and Rao Ramesh as the lawyer are also impressive.

Technical Excellence: Rustic, dry locations shot mostly in Tamilnadu have given credence to the theme. the camera work is good. the production design follows the original film.

sreekanth addala’s dialogues in the rayolaseema jargon are perfect. Mani Sharma’s music is the same as the original.

analysis “narappa” is the second collaboration between venkatesh and director sreekanth addala after “seethamma vaakitlo sirimalle chettu”. unlike his previous movie, “narappa” is a remake of a tamil movie, asuran.

One of the reasons why ‘asuran’ instantly appealed to audiences is that a young dhanush plays a middle-aged character. he played the father of adult children. his transformation into that role captivated everyone. while venkatesh, who is over 60 years old, playing that role, is not surprising at all. however, venkatesh was ahead of the game by redoing this.

revenge as a central theme, “narappa” is a multi-layered story that also deals with social inequality, class division, the feudal system in villages in a bygone era. in the end, it also highlights the importance of education.

‘narappa’ begins as a father trying to protect his youngest son from the town’s landowners, who are after him.

The first half of the film is a captivatingly narrated survival drama. without deviating an inch from the story, the first half of the process is gripping. the interval explosion and fight sequence are well captured. the first half of the movie also has a high emotional quotient, which makes for a fascinating watch.

The second half of the film switches to a revenge drama, with the hero’s flashback story taking its place. the flashback portions were also weak in the original Tamil film. and in this new version, they are even more passive.

also, venkatesh seems out of place as a younger narappa. While his entire community lives in small shacks in penury, Venkatesh wears colorful, pressed dresses.

the romantic thread between venkatesh and ammu abhirami seems strange, due to the age difference between them in real life. dhanush is a much younger person in real life, and his relationship with ammu abhirami looked good. this whole part is shot more like a normal commercial movie than a realistic movie.

Shortly after the backstory ends, the film picks up the track, further capturing the bond between a father and son.

It’s very difficult to watch these kinds of remakes, as every frame and minute detail is copied directly from the original. even camera angles, artwork, and stage properties are lifted and panned seamlessly.

“narappa” certainly has some emotional moments and is a frame-by-frame remake. still, it pales in comparison to the original Tamil film in many ways. Venkatesh and Priyamani’s acting and interesting plot are the reason why “narappa” works in parts. it could have worked as a whole if the second half had been handled better.
