If you’ve been on Twitter lately, you know there’s no escaping eye-catching leaks from the set of Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s latest directorial effort, which she co-wrote with her partner, Noah Baumbach. Everything from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling skating in fluorescent ’80s-inspired outfits, to cast photos, to Ryan Gosling’s damn platinum blonde hair. we have seen it all and yet we have not seen enough.
The movie hits theaters next year and we’re patiently waiting to see what happens. Until then, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the upcoming Barbie movie.
who stars in barbie?
from what we know so far, gosling will star against robbie, who will play the main character, as a totally broke ken. This may sound like a natural choice, but it seems that as much as he loved the script, Gosling needed a little push to accept the role. well, that push came in the form of an upside down ken doll…on the ground…next to a lemon. Speaking on tonight’s show, Gosling opened up to host Jimmy Fallon about how he finally decided to accept after receiving the initial offer.
“best script i’ve ever read. i go out in the garden and do you know where i found ken, jimmy?” Gosling said: “Face down in the mud next to a crushed lemon. I texted [the photo] to Greta and said, ‘I’ll be your ken, because her story needs to be told.'”
aside from robbie and gosling, we can expect a stacked cast list, especially since gosling likely won’t be the only ken in the movie and robbie won’t be the only barbie. albeit in roles not yet specified, here is the list of several others set to appear: issa rae, kate mckinnon, simu liu, n’cuti gatwa, emma mackey (who looks a lot like robbie, by the way), america fererra, will ferrell , michael cera, hari nef, alexandra shipp, kingsley ben-adir, rhea perlman, emerald fennell, sharon rooney, ariana greenblatt, and jamie demetriou.
Saoirse Ronan and Dua Lipa were rumored to be in the upcoming movie, but Ronan quashed those rumors when she announced that she was “heartbroken” to be out due to scheduling conflicts. “There was a whole character that she was going to play, another barbie,” she told People. but hope sprouts eternally; The actress added, “I texted Margot and Greta and said, ‘If you’re doing some takes, maybe I can walk around in the background?'” Get ready to play “where’s saiorse?”
what is barbie about?
This we cannot say with certainty. filming has just started, so a trailer is still missing. However, we do know that there are some twists to come, and that the movie probably won’t be a fluffy barbie life in the dreamhouse flick.
talking to the hollywood reporter, robbie confirmed it. “People immediately have an idea of, ‘oh, margot’s playing barbie, I know what it is,'” she said, “but our goal is to be like, ‘whatever you’re thinking, we’ll give you something totally different: what that you didn’t know you wanted.”
Rumors that the film contains multiple Barbies have been confirmed by Sex Education and Death on the Nile alum Emma Mackey. Speaking to Empire, Mackey mentioned a sleepover between the Barbie cast that has fans talking. “Right at the beginning, we had a sleepover for the barbies, which involved playing with scott [evans] and ncuti [gatwa],” she said.
later added that “barbie is light, fun, goofy, American and pink.” Don’t worry, she won’t make you cry. “It’s very unexpected in a lot of ways,” Mackey said.
