When Does Demon Slayer Take Place and Where Is It Set? (Demon Slayer Timeline)
The timeline of the popular demon slayer anime is perfect for the swordsmanship shown by the main characters, the demon hunters who fight evil demons and stop them from spreading. It’s also perfect for an anime, which is made in Japan, since the setting of the series takes place in the country itself.
demon slayer took place in the taisho era of japan, which occurred around 1912 to 1926. the locations seen throughout the story were located in various areas of tokyo, including the setting for the movie and the train. that’s why demon slayer has a historical genre for a series.
As seen in the timeline, demon slayer is considered a manga series with a historical genre. For me, the setting of the story seems perfect for the fighting styles of the demon hunters, which are based on the samurai of the Taisho period. there are several interesting things in demon slayer that are also based on the taisho period. To find out more about demon slayer’s connection to almost everything in the taisho era, particularly in terms of appearance, I’ll show you everything in this article.
chronology of the demon slayer
Demon Slayer’s timeline is the Taisho period, which took place from 1912 to 1926. The era was also mentioned in the story’s earlier parts, such as the scene where Tanjiro fought the grotesque demon with several hands. There are several places and things that are reminiscent of the Taisho era, which will be explained later on.
It is a time when modernization begins, so the stage still has the touch of old Japan. the wooden houses, the wide fields and wild nature of the country, the rural lifestyle of most of the Japanese people, the railway systems and the samurai are the notable features of this scenery. this is unique when it comes to a manga series, as most anime series are often set in the edo period, or may be themed around the time.
The demon slayer uniform is a well-known military outfit worn by samurai in the Taisho era, which is completely different from the common robes worn in the Edo period. this is what makes samurai-themed anime unique from other anime that also have a historical concept, often using the edo period, as noted above. this is one of the most remarkable concepts introduced in demon slayer which gave its unique charm to the viewers.
Note that the entire series focused on the taisho era, except for the extended final chapter of the manga. this means that even the movie took place during the same period. As for the movie, I will explain more details about the place where the battle happened and almost the whole movie. so read on to learn more about the richness of demon slayer in terms of historical value.
when does the demon slayer anime series take place?
The timeline of the real-life story began around 1912 to 1926, although there was no specific date in the series. the concept of the series about demons corresponds to the historical period, where people firmly believe in superstition. a notable example was wisteria flowers, which were considered to be closely associated with the dead, as they were supposed to grow near tombs. this corresponds to the deadly theme of demons and adds an ironic feel to it, as it is used as a repellant against them.
Another instance of folklore in the story is the tengu mask worn by the uroodaki, as well as other supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore. Folklore artwork was also a common decoration on houses and other buildings during the Taisho era. the habits of people during the taisho era were also noted in the series. A perfect example was Tanjiro’s amazement when he noticed the bustling civilization of Tokyo, compared to the towns he often visits at his home.
speaking of tokyo, the taisho era was also the period when there was a noticeable difference in the civilization of the communities. Since it is an era where modernization and industrialization are beginning, technology and new trends in clothing are being introduced. that’s why characters like muzan wore suits. There are also trains present in the timeline, as well as the noticeable difference between Tokyo and other places outside of the bustling city.
The uniform worn by demon slayers also comes from the Taisho period, which resembled the black school uniforms worn by male Japanese students. And of course, who wouldn’t forget the legendary samurai of ancient japan? the samurai of the taisho era are exactly the demon slayers of the series, the nichirin sword being their katana for combat. The women’s attire is somewhat reminiscent of the ancient era, compared to muzan and demon slayer attire, as evident with nezuko and tamayo’s clothing.
Since the demon slayer corps has a samurai theme, they possess nichirin blades which are exactly the same as a katana. even some of the fighting styles of the characters in the series are similar to what real samurai did, except for the extraordinary effects of the breathing styles. no matter how many series have passed with the same theme, samurai and anime come together in perfect harmony!
when does the demon slayer movie take place?
The Movie, Mugen Train, took place in the same period. The trains back in the Taisho period are similar to the trains in other countries such as the United States during the early 1900s. The train has a coal-powered engine for it to operate back in the day and is black and cylindrical in terms of its overall appearance. This is the classic train that goes “choo-choo”, coupled with a chimney that emits all the smoke due to the coal used to power the vehicle.
knowing that the era was focused on industrialization, the taisho era train present in demon slayer is as comfortable as the way life begins to return in the 1910s and 1920s. this is evident due to the model of the train that is used, with adjustments from the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks to industrialization and modernization trends, the appearance of the interior of the train appears to be elegant, with seats that are as comfortable as today’s modern seats would offer.
As for the location of the railway, it could vary a lot, especially during the part where the train started running. the location may vary as the exact location of the train was never revealed as the film focused on hunting a demon. Therefore, the setting of the film could have taken place in the outskirts of Tokyo, or in areas such as Yokohama or Shinbashi.
when does the final chapter take place?
The final chapter of the manga is quite different as it was an era that took several decades after the taisho era. this is today’s era, where we can see bustling buildings rising up into the sky. there are also streets, concrete houses, modern furniture, internet, manga, playgrounds, schools, police cars and much more. the story takes place in a similar timeline as we have, which is around 60 to 80 years. far from the taisho era.
It’s just that most of the characters looked like tanjiro and the others because they are direct descendants of these kids who go to the same school. they could be the great-grandchildren of the main characters of those who lived in the taisho era. the characters also displayed traits that fit the modern era, such as being late for school, waking up to an alarm, as well as being artistic enough to draw manga. The setting for the final chapter will most likely be Tokyo, as the location is located near a big bustling city.
where is demon slayer set?
Demon slayer is set in Japan, as seen in some scenes of the series where the actual places in Japan were mentioned. The setting of some of the fight scenes in the story is also known to match the appearance of structures back in the Taisho era. Some villages are still made of wood, and some houses are still located in forests, just like Tanjiro’s house.
since modernization is only present in japan during time, most of the locations in the story, especially during the early parts of the series, are located in the field that does not have any vehicles. It is also known that the lifestyle of the people during that time is as harsh as that of the ancient era. This is evident when Tanjiro had to walk for several hours just to reach the closest village to his house which is isolated in the forest.
Some of the fight scenes in the series show the style of houses in the Taisho period. a notable example was the scene where tanjiro met zenitsu. the huge building that changes rooms has many historical designs in keeping with the times. there is the classic structure of a Japanese house that is made purely of wood. and of course, the tatami will never be excluded from most of the structures in the series.
some objects reminiscent of the taisho period were very prominent in the series. one of the most notable items was the katana, which is a common weapon for samurai. Tengu and fox masks were also used in ancient japan as it is part of the folklore they were so good at back in the day.
Objects based on folklore, such as the omnio symbols, are also present in the series, but play a more supernatural role than in real life. omnoyo was used a lot in folklore, so it’s used as a design for yushiro’s blood demon art.
European-inspired clothing can also be seen in Tokyo, worn by ordinary people and main characters like muzan. After all, many cultures arrived when Japan opened up to the rest of the world. but note that traditional Japanese clothing was still present. tabi socks, two-toed socks that many Japanese used to wear in the past, were featured prominently in the series. there is also the kyahan, which is a type of anklet that also serves as inner padding for a samurai outfit.
the last chapter shows modern japan, complete with buildings and without villages or secluded houses in the forest. it also showed schools, which is the main setting of the final chapter.
where does demon slayer take place in japan?
As far as the story goes, it’s the mission to become a strong Demon Slayer, which looking for a cure to turn Nezuko back to normal, was the focus of the places that Tanjiro visits. Thus, there are no specific details regarding most of the locations in the story, except Tokyo, which was revealed to be as modern as the real-life version of it in the actual Taisho era.
if you look at the places tanjiro visited, the only way to find out the other places in japan that appeared in demon slayer is to go back to where tanjiro was before he got to tokyo. if you look at some maps, you might assume that tanjiro was headed for areas like hitachi, shimotsuma, shizouka, or even nagano. These are notable areas surrounding Tokyo. but keep in mind this is just my guess as the areas were never revealed in the series, and you sure know demon slayer is over now.
demon slayer is one of those impressive anime series that showcases the rich culture and tradition of ancient japan by setting the story in a historical era. It’s what makes Japan as attractive as it is today, and how creative they were even before manga and anime were born.
